Its okay: Severe ankle sprains take a while to heal. By placing in a Cam walker (walking boot) the doctor is retaining and restrengthen your muscle which have not been used for 6 weeks. You should be getting back to "normal" activities soon. You may need some physical therapy and at times you may have pain while your body fully recovers. ...Read more

Would a plaster cast be needed for my ankle sprain? It's been 6 weeks it's swollen in pain but my initial X-ray show no breaks
Unlikely: A plaster or fiberglass cast is commonly used for broken ankles. Although you may not have a broken ankle, you may have tearing of the ligaments or tendons in your ankle. If you are still having pain and and an unstable feeling in the ankle 6 weeks after your injury, you should be evaluated by a physician. It is possible you would benefit from exercise therapy or visiting a physical therapist. ...Read more

After 3 weeks in a cast your ankle will be stiff and may take a few days to move well. It takes 6 weeks to get 90% strength to your healing ligaments, longer if you have nicotine or anti-inflammatory medications in your blood. Relatively flat shoes, and may need a brace.

I have a grade 2-3 ankle sprain, I have ace wrap air cast and crutches. Can I sleep in the ace and cast and when does this pain and swelling go away?
Try it without.: You probably don't have to sleep in the cast, but the foot and leg should be elevated. Use several pillows to supply support to the entire leg. The foot needs to be elevated to speed up the de-swelling process. Ice application and swelling reduction should reduce the pain. Try taking Advil (ibuprofen) for faster pain relief. If you need to get up at night, use the crutches. ...Read more
I am in an air cast for an ankle sprain. All its doing is causing swelling and pain. Could I juat wear and ankle brace instead?
Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively. The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function. So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace. Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain. ...Read more

Hi- I have a grade 3 ankle sprain s/p 56 hours. X-rays negative for fracture. I am wearing a cast boot and walking FWB. Should I do NWB?
Not necessarily: In general, you would want to stay off it to try to limit the swelling. Once you get beyond that, there is usually no contraindications to weight bearing as tolerated in a cast. The ligaments involved are not so much involved in weight bearing as they are in stabilizing the ankle and so would be protected in a cast. Discuss your specific case with your doctor. ...Read more
I am casted for a ankle sprain/and two minor fibula fractures. My foot isn't sore, so does that mean I can play sports as soon as my cast is gone?
Post injury rehab: Just as important as the treatment or surgery is the rehab of the extremity. The isolation of the part will weaken the muscles and hurt your balance. Several weeks to months of physical therapy often done to help bring you back to normal, and, even then, you'll have to ease back into the sport or activity or risk reinjury of the area (s). ...Read more
If your sprain was bad enough to be in a cast and not in a boot I would leave it on for 2-3 weeks. Removal of the cast will allow range of motion but it would still need to be protected either w/ crutches a boot or ankle brace.
