Not usually: Though the posterior tibial nerve is in the vicinity of the os trigonium (posterior ankle joint) swelling will not usually cause nerve damage. Swelling can bring out some tarsal tunnel symptoms if you were predisposed to them from an already tight tarsal tunnel. Severe sprain: This sounds like a third degree ( possibly second degree) sprain involving teating of the supporting ligament of the ankle and pooling of blood either into the musvle or the ankle joint itself. Obtain immediate orthopedic evaluation. Advise immediate rest, ice, compression and elevation, aircast splint and er if symtoms worsen. Ok to use advol or aleve (naproxen) for pain and swelling. ...Read more

Are you on levoquin?: Levoquin is an antibiotic associated with achelles tendon rupture, so if you are not, then there is not much in common with ankle swelling/pain and flu illness. ...Read more
