Instability: It is unlikely that if you have already given it 4 years and it is still causing problems that it will get better at this point by simply giving it more time. It is likely that you tore a ligament or ligaments in your ankle that just never healed. Choice would be either to live with it with it without some form of orthotic or consider a surgical opinion. ...Read more

Ankle Pain: See a foot and ankle specialist. X-rays will be taken and maybe MRI to see what is causing your pain. Since it's not constant it maybe be nothing serious. Mri will detect it there is erosion of cartilage on the talar dome. ...Read more

Not usually: Though the posterior tibial nerve is in the vicinity of the os trigonium (posterior ankle joint) swelling will not usually cause nerve damage. Swelling can bring out some tarsal tunnel symptoms if you were predisposed to them from an already tight tarsal tunnel. Severe sprain: This sounds like a third degree ( possibly second degree) sprain involving teating of the supporting ligament of the ankle and pooling of blood either into the musvle or the ankle joint itself. Obtain immediate orthopedic evaluation. Advise immediate rest, ice, compression and elevation, aircast splint and er if symtoms worsen. Are you on levoquin?: Levoquin is an antibiotic associated with achelles tendon rupture, so if you are not, then there is not much in common with ankle swelling/pain and flu illness. ...Read more
