Must be peripheral: Hyperactive deep tendon reflexes reflect involvement of the upper motor neuron (spinal cord and/or brain). Symmetry also matters so if the patellar reflexes are normal then it is very unlikely to be a problem above the spinal cord. An EMG might be helpful. Good luck. ...Read more

Have pain in back. Doctors say its nerve and I need to go neurologist. My leg jerks on its own and have severe pain. What could this be?

Could be related: Sorry you're experiencing these symptoms. Ask your doctor or spinal specialist whether the leg symptoms are related. He or she may order a spinal MRI. In your area, either a neurologist or a physiatrist could perform additional testing to determine what may be causing your leg symptoms. TheHeebeeJeebees??: Yeah, me too. I'd see a doctor sooner than later. This could mean something that will get worse so don't drive yourself. Get someone to take you to the ER right now unless it's completely stopped and you feel OK. If that's the case you could probably wait to see your doctor tomorrow, even if nothing else happens, so he or she knows what's going on. Maybe some tests are in order. ...Read more

Sometimes I feel like my knee was pricked with a needle and then my foot jerks right after. Is this normal? What could be wrong?

Sometimes I feel like my knee was pricked with a needle and then my foot jerks right after. Is this normal? What could be wrong?

Likely Normal: This is likely the result of normal episodic nerve stimulus that can happen in healthy individuals from time to time. It can also result from a pinching of the peroneal (or fibular) nerve based on certain postures or leg positions. If you experience prolonged nerve-type pain, or weakness in the leg, or the current symptoms worsen, I would suggest an in-person exam. ...Read more
