No limit but....: There is no set number of times that a ganglion can be aspirated. Sometimes they go away with one and sometimes they persist. A persistent ganglion could be an indicator of a rate tumor. It is a good idea to have the fluid expressed from the ganglion examined by a pathologist to see if all the cells in the fluid are clean and healthy. I find it helps to inject a little corticosteroid into the gang. ...Read more

2 yrs ago I got a cyst in my ankle and had to get surgery which required metal plates, I rencently got another on my wrist. What's causing the cysts?
Cause is not known: Causes of unicameral bone cysts are unknown. One theory is that the cysts result from a disorder in the growth plate at the ends of bones. Another theory is that the cysts result from problems with blood circulation in the bone due to some abnormal blood vessels. Whether trauma influences the formation of these bone cysts is not known. An orthopedic (bone) surgeon can take care of the problem. ...Read more

I applied essential oil to a ganglion cyst on my ankle and it dissolved but the surrounding area has significant swelling that is increasing over time?
Hard to say. :
By definition, "alternative" is different from modern western medicine. Generally any drug, herb, treatment, or oil that stands up to rigorous scientific scrutiny is included in modern medicine. Many alternative practices, oils etc do not stand up to scientific scrutiny and cannot be shown to work. 'Course the people who sell them make big $$$. Check https://nccih.nih.gov/

I have been told that I have a baker's cyst behind my left knee. My ankle and leg are very swollen. Is this a part of the baker's cyst. Remedy?
Cyst or drainage?: These do sometimes track pretty far down the leg. It could certainly be the cyst itself if it remains on the posterior aspect of the leg. Another possibility is that it has caused some pressure on one of the large veins behind the knee causing swelling at both the leg in the ankle. I would see an orthopedic surgeon to help make a diagnosis and guide treatment. ...Read more
If I have a cyst on my ankle/back of foot, is surgery a must for removal? It is very hard and my foot falls asleep often for no reason. Thank you.
There are :
Different types of cysts. Having said that as long as the lesion is benign then you don't have to do surgery.
Your foot falling asleep is a concern and I am not sure the two are related. I would follow up with doc to find out why the foot falls asleep often that's not a good thing. ...Read more

There are different:
Types of (blood clots).... Anything that can be seen on the surface of the skin like black and blue etc is not a true blood clot. Blood clots that concern us medically are deep vein thrombosis.

I have swollen knee and baker's cyst. Did MRI and everything is ok. Had it drained, took anti inflammatory mednothing helps. Now my ankle is swollen!
Improve function: It sounds like lymphatic and/or venous drainage may be impaired to that leg. I would seek the advice of two specialties; namely a highly recommended orthopedist to possibly repeat the MRI, not just of the knee, but possibly the lumbar spine, and another highly recommended chiropractor or osteopath that does manipulation, to assist with improving circulation to the affected limb. ...Read more

Severe knee pain bend, walk, stairs, etc. MRI 5 yrs ago partial tear of ACL & cyst. Now radiates in calf/down leg; wakes @ night; ankle fract May '13?
Get examined!: Your symptoms suggest patellofemoral(kneecap) pain. Your 'cyst' may be causing the pain in the back of your knee (popliteal/ Bakers' cyst). Not sure if your 'partial' ACL injury is causing symptoms or not without a thorough examination(it can cause cysts in the knee joint occasssionally.) See a board certified ORS. is surgery my best course of action?
Not yet: Aspiration (using a needle to drain it) would be helpful, but most likely will return, however it's still an option before surgery. Injection steriod into the area is not recommended as it can commonly lead to achilles tendon rupture. If pain continues even after aspiration, then surgery is a viable and safe option as well.
