Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively. The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function. So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace. Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain. ...Read more

Too much strain from: The sprain causing swelling in the brace used. Need to elevate leg at the end of the day to drain the extra lymphatic fluid so it goes back to your heart. And remain off your sprained foot as much as you can with it elevated throughout most of the day until it heels. ...Read more

Depends: Does the brace relieve symptoms? The brace is not a substitute for rehab. Typically, i utilize more functional braces that are often smaller and utilize velcro or laces. The stirrup splint can be too restrictive once in the final recovery stages. It's not a very functional brace during athletic participation either. If you mean posterior tib tendonitis, there are braces made specifically for this. ...Read more

Reduce edema: Some ankle sprains takes 2-3 months to heal, usually by reducing the edema (swelling) will decrease your pain level. Compression stockings , ice, anti inflammatory medications like Motrin /naprosyn, unna boot (soft cast ) physical therapy, walking cast boot, ankle braces all help with healing and reducing swelling. X-rays are needed to make sure there are no fractures/dislocations. See a physician. ...Read more
