See below: It may not need treatment and be just followed by imaging to ensure that it is not growing. If treatment is needed, it need not be invasive surgery, the lesion could be treated by embolizing the blood vessel.

Kidney (Definition)

The kidneys are paired organs that lie on either side of the vertebral column. Part of their critical functions include the excretion of urine and removal of nitrogenous wastes products from the blood. They regulate acid-base, electrolyte, fluid balance and blood pressure. Through hormonal signals, the kidneys control the ...Read more

2cm angiomyolipoma and 2 small cysts left kidney, scan again in 6 months to measure growth, will they need treatment?

No: These are benign entities. Angiomyolipomas are only treated if they are very large, due to propensity to spontaneously bleed. Small ones, like yours, are of little or no concern. ...Read more

What is angiomyolipoma of the kidney? Is it treatable?

Benign tumor: This is a fairly common benign tumor. If the imaging specialist is certain of the diagnosis, it's perhaps best left alone. If you have more than one, or other signs, it's suggestive of tuberous sclerosis, a highly variable genetic illness. A big one may respond to some recently-devised medical management. ...Read more

Hi doctors, was just wondering what is angiomyolipoma of the kidney?

Benign tumor: They are most common benign tumor of kidney. Comprised of vascular cells, smooth muscle cells ; fat cells they are liable to spontaneous hemorrhage. Most commonly seen in patients with tuberous sclerosis. Usually do not require intervention. Optimal management is conservative to preserve as much normal functioning kidney tissue as possible. Large tumors can often be managed by embolisation. ...Read more

How safe is embolization for angiomyolipoma on kidney?

How safe is embolization for angiomyolipoma on kidney?

Depends on reason: Embolization is indicated for renal angiomyolipomas in the setting of bleeding from the tumors. In such cases, the procedure can be life-saving and can also help preserve kidney tissue (as opposed to taking the whole organ out). In skilled hands, it is considered to be relatively safe and necessary procedure. As with all vascular procedures, the major risk is bleeding from the site. ...Read more

Embolization for angiomyolipoma on kidney, can you tell me more about this?

Embolization for angiomyolipoma on kidney, can you tell me more about this?

Can be done: Angiomyolipoma or AML is a fatty tumor often considered a benign disease. It can be solitary or part of a genetic complex called tuberous sclerosis and present with many deposits. It carries a risk of bleeding. Embolization or placing coils into the small arteries feeding the mass is one way to treat it. The decision may require careful evaluation of the size and location of the mass. ...Read more

My father (49 years) is suffering from angiomyolipoma, what is treatment?

Bleeding?: Kidney angiomyolipomas are usually benign and asymptomatic but can bleed particularly if they get large (around 4 cm). Treatment for bleeding is putting a catheter into the the artery or arteries supplying the tumor and then occluding the bleeding vessels with coils placed through the catheter. ...Read more

Have a questionable 4mm angiomyolipoma in upper pole of right kidney. Radiologist seemed unsure. What else could it be that resembles angiomyolipoma?

Too small right now: This is too small to worry about. Unless it becomes bigger with more time, you can ignore it. I would ask you to get it rechecked it in 6 to 12 months and look for any growth if it gets larger than it has to be removed which is the best way to manage it provided it is getting bigger in size. ...Read more

Symptoms?: If getting symptoms, e.g. Pain, bleeding, altered kidney function, then may need this common, benign abnormality treated. If shown to be benign, and none of the above, then simply observation/monitoring may be fine. Check with your doc. ...Read more

Right Kidney ultrasound shows 25x21 mm size angiomyolipoma. Is it considered large? What should be done about it. Currently there are no symptoms.

Angiolipoma: 22 mm is 2 cm which is moderate size. Angiolipomas are benign so would just monitor especially since there are not symptoms and surgery is not without risk.

I'm in stage 3 Kidney Disease w/ large renal angiomyolipomas bilaterally. My doc has no fluid restrictions. I drink 3-4 liters H2O daily. Too much?

Sounds fine: Water isn't a burden on your kidneys. Only late in the course of kidney failure will there be a need to restrict, for the sake of the rest of your body. Hopefully that won't happen. Do look for a cause of your renal insufficiency other than your TS / lipomas. If it's just loss of renal mass from compression, ACE inhibitors might slow progression. Keep learning & glad you asked. ...Read more

Why do I need a abdomen and pelvic CT scan for small suspected kidney angiomyolipoma?

Why do I need a abdomen and pelvic CT scan for small suspected kidney angiomyolipoma?

Angiomyolipoma: I assume something was seen on an ultrasound that might be an angiomyolipoma (AML)? The ultrasound appearance can be suggestive of AML, not diagnostic. It could still be other types of masses. The CT appearance should be diagnostic, because CT can specifically detect the fat in the AML that confirms the diagnosis. Not sure why pelvic CT necessary if AML confirmation is only issue. ...Read more

Renal sonogram of kidney for high BP showed no stenosis but showed a 4mm angiomyolipoma in the upper pole of kidney. Should I see a nephrologist?

Angiomyolipoma: A small angiomyolipoma of 4 mm does not require special care by a nephrologist. See a urologist. Be followed with ultrasound every 6 months to determine if it grows. An interventional radiologist can perform cryoablation of these or they can be removed surgically. ...Read more

Probably Not: Probably not - amls are benign tumors, with generally a characteristic appearance on us.

However, especially given your history, please keep following the plan for surveillance you and your doctor (s) have come up with.

Ct with dye fnd spots in kidneys, radio thought they may be angiomyolipoma but cld not b sure. Also chronic changes in lung bases. Any cause 4 concern?

Angiomyolipoma Dx: The addition of MRI to rule out angiomyolipoma helps a little. It is also a good way to follow the lesion to see if it grows (no radiation and the dye is safer).
Chronic lung changes in a 35 yo is nonspecific and needs clinical correlation. Some folks may do breathing tests if there are symptoms like shortness of breath, even if only for baseline. Everyone should quit smoking ASAP. ...Read more
