Severe urticaria & angioedema every day for 10 weeks now. Allergy tests show nothing. Not responding to antihistamine, steriods, or prednisone. Help!
Occasionally when allergy is high i get mild SOB and some light wheezing. Asmanex VS. Singulair (montelukast). Which one is better to treat Allergy induced Asthma.
Depends : Montelukast (Singulair (montelukast)) works well in some patients, but inhaled steroids (Asmanex is one of several) are more reliably effective, in general. Singulair (montelukast) has the advantage of helping nasal and eye allergies, too. Always start with a emergency inhaler like albuterol first. All three are prescription; discuss side effects w/ provider. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can E-cigs cause Stridor? Polyphonic stridor after exercise/cough/chemicals. Inhaler 6x + a day. Take flonase/zyrtec for dust allergies, doesnt help.
Yes: E cig is not as innocuous as it may appear. The heated chemical-containing vapor (even if it is "organic") may irritate your throat. The best way to tell is not to use it for 2 weeks and see if your symptoms improve. If you are pregnant , it is unwise to smoke anything since this may adversely impact the health of your baby possibly for the rest of his life. ...Read more

Finished 2nd cycle of Clomid (clomiphene) & developed severe rash, welts and hives. Also took new prenatal vitamin around same time. Which is more likely culprit?
If I start taking allergy shots, can I stop using an inhaler before running? * The inhaler (with albuterol) is only used during high pollen seasons.
Possible: Since only 80% of the people respond to allergy shots, you may be able to avoid using albuterol before exercise if you are in the 80% group. However the probability is likely under 10% . Try exercising without using the albuterol and see what happens. Do realize that allergy shots usually take several months to provide benefit and controlling your nasal symptoms may improve asthma as well. ...Read more
Hives urticaria x 3 weeks. Antihistamines and prednisone are moderately effective only with consistent use. Would a skin biopsy help determine cause?
No: A skin biopsy can help prove that these are hives, but usually cannot help to identify a trigger (unless you have underlying blood vessel disease called vasculitis). Prednisone should be avoided if possible because the hives can come back stronger when it is stopped. There are many potential triggers to discuss with a physician and many effective treatment options. Recommend Health Tap consult. ...Read more
Get frequent mild hives, but recently also had flushing. How would a chronic hive sufferer know the diff between impending anaphylaxis & my reg hives?
Have allergies, hives that are frequent, sometimes warm flushing. When to use epipen (epinephrine)? For every bout of hives? Never have breathing probs or swelling.
No epipen (epinephrine): Epipen (epinephrine) should be used only when you have breathing problem from swelling in the throat of tongue or starting or faint from anaphylaxis. It should not be used for hives which can usually be controlled with 4x daily antihistamine. Consult an allergist to find out what can b e done about your hives. ...Read more
Angioedema & 4+ to birch pollen. 4 cetirizine/day, tongue+face swell LOT in summer. On pred. for months + stay inside - anything else you recommend?
Pollen allergy?: If the swelling occurs only during the summer and you have documented allergy to pollen during the season, you may consider starting allergy shots during the off season to modify your allergic response to that pollen. I must admit that I have yet seen a case of pollen allergy-> angioedema. In the meanwhile, consider getting a HEPA filter or A/C for your home or at least the bedroom. ...Read more

Can you develop hives suddenly after long term use of daily baby aspirin (15 years). IgE normal. Recurrent hives x 9 months. Skin test/ labs normal. ?
Yes: Sorry to hear you have this very distressing condition. Random onset of hives is quite common and may not have anything to do with the aspirin particularly if there has been no lapse in the aspirin regimen. Labs cannot confirm or rule out aspirin allergy. A careful history taking and timeline is essential. FYI Aspirin / NSAIDS sensitivity (aka AERD) is a different animal. ...Read more
Read few cases of exercise induced anaphylaxis for ppl with cholinergic hives. I have his type of hives. Cant affrd epipen (epinephrine). still ok to exercise?
Exercise induced: Anaphylaxis is often associated with ingestion of certain foods prior to exercise, such as green vegetables. What can be common in cholinergic urticaria and exercise induced anaphylaxis is probably activation by heat, still both have complex mechanisms. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) before exercise, avoid exercising in hot/humid environment, and right after meals,air-conditioned gym would be better, don't overdo it, ...Read more
Depends: The term "allergy rash" is non-specific. If it is poisen ivy or ecxema, a rash characterized by dry, scaly patches where itchiness is a major symptom then antihistamines such as Claritin or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may be helpful. Zyrtec, in my experience, is actually better for itchiness. In more severe cases, topical or oral corticosteroids may have to be used. ...Read more
