What is the best test to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia of chronic disease?

What is the best test to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia of chronic disease?

Ferritin: Ferritin measures the amount of iron storage in the body and usually is really low in iron deficiency anemia, contrary to anemia of chronic disease that usually shows a normal ferritin level. There are other parameters to take into account off course but this one is one of the best to differentiate.

Low serum iron 36 and very high ferritin level 1, 171. Is this anemia of chronic disease? High liver enzymes and ALP 476. What's wrong?

Need more info: A complete history is needed! What other Med problems u have? The possibilities are many: anemia w elevated ferritin and normal MCV could be chronic disease. The elevated liver enzymes need imaging and if hep B and C were r/out, maybe a liver biopsy. Many chronic conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, autoimmune liver disease, may cause these findings. Did you mean Alfa fetoprotein? .see PCP

Can chronic disease lead to depression?

Can chronic disease lead to depression?

Yes: Diagnosis of a chronic disease is a life-changing experience. Often the management of the disease requires to limit things used to do prior to the diagnosis, bringing a sense of loss. Medical condition proper and side effects of medication also can bring changes in your emotional state. I would recommend discussing chronic disease impact on your life with a health psychologist.

A known person of age 16 started taking 100 mg cetirizine per day. Planning to continue for next few months. Will any chronic disease attack her with?

A known person of age 16 started taking 100 mg cetirizine per day. Planning to continue for next few months. Will any chronic disease attack her with?

Why?: Usually no one needs more than 40 mg of cetirizine daily (and that's for hives) and thus I wonder why this person needs to take 100 mg of it daily? It will likely cause some drowsiness and possibly dry mouth, or even constipation. If we know more about what condition this is supposed to treat, we can give you a better answer.
