Does anybody even know what androstenedione is for?

Does anybody even know what androstenedione is for?

Steroid precursor: Androstenedione is a precursor to naturally occurring steroid (testosterone). The rationale behind using it as a supplement is that if you provide your body with more of the precursor or the desired stuff, then your body will make more of the desired stuff. Studies have not shown that andro supplementation increases testosterone or increases strength. It may increase the female hormone, estradiol. ...Read more

My androstenedione test results came out as above 5.5. I want to know whether is this value normal, high or very high?

My androstenedione test results came out as above 5.5. I want to know whether is this value normal, high or very high?

Check with that lab: Different labs use different scales.
Also, the lab would likely have normal values based on age. Every lab result I've seen has that evaluation (normal, high, low) attached to it.

Or, when prolactin levels are high enough, androgen levels may increase also. Chicken or egg? An endocrinologist should be able to untangle cause and effect. Does high androstenidione level in a girl with pcos imply that she has estrogen dominance or low progesterone?

Does high androstenidione level in a girl with pcos imply that she has estrogen dominance or low progesterone?

Unclear: Usually, patients with pcos have normal adrenal hormone levels- normal androstenedione, normal dhea and normal 17 hydroxyprogesterone- the most common finding is isolated high free testosterone. The problem is lack of ovulation and excessive production of male hormones in the ovary. I would ask your doctor to clarify the elevated adrenal levels. She may need more evaluation. ...Read more

What is a normal androstenedione level for women in their 20's?

Varies: For a woman in your twenties it varies where you may be in your cycle. For example, women postmenopausal have values ranging from 20-75 ng/dl. If you are having regular menstrual cycles it depends on if you are in the follicular stage where values are 35-250 ng/dl or luteal phase of your cycle where the vakues range from 30-235 ng/dl. Obviously the range for this test is broad. ...Read more

Does very high androstenedione indicate an adrenal tumour??

Does very high androstenedione indicate an adrenal tumour??

Generally not: Hi. Generally hi androstenedione does not mean tumor, although it can be associated with some tumors of the adrenal cortex. Adrenal tumors can be benign or cancer, and they can be hormonally "silent" or create syndromes by producing hormones. Hi androstenedione is more commonly associated with non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Do you have hirsutism/irregular periods/amenorrhea? Tumor? ...Read more
