Anal Mucus Discharge (Overview)

Anal mucous discharge is a symptom in which a person has mucous coming out of his anus (either mucous by itself, or mucous mixed with stool/poop). Infection and autoimmune disease (when a person's own immune system is over-active against himself) can cause anal mucous discharge.

Can too much castor oil cause anal mucus discharge? The first 36 hours it was a yellowish color with a little diarrhea, after which, it turned black.

Can too much castor oil cause anal mucus discharge? The first 36 hours it was a yellowish color with a little diarrhea, after which, it turned black.

Yes...: Castor oil has stimulant laxative properties causing forceful contractions of the intestine and violent diarrhea. The intestine contains cells that secrete mucous providing a lubricant function. I suspect the castor oil has led to a overproduction of mucous which you are seeing in the anal discharge. If your stool is black - seek medical attention to rule out bleeding from the GI tract.

Every once in a while I get a yellow anal mucus discharge and this time it was mixed with a little blood, what does that mean?

Every once in a while I get a yellow anal mucus discharge and this time it was mixed with a little blood, what does that mean?

Rectal bleeding: Blood and mucus from the anus is not normal. It may indicate colitis, either infectious or other. Hemorrhoids may bleed but there is no mucoid discharge. It sounds like you would benefit from a sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy.

Discuss with surgeon: In some instances this may be a sign of other disease but most likely benign. You may need a follow up colonoscopy or biopsy but this will be determined by your physician, .

I had a hemorrhoids operation, the hemorrhoids were removed. This was 5 months ago, since then I have anal mucus discharge. What can I do about it?

See the surgeon: Seems late to be still healing. Depends though on what type of hemorrhoid surgery was performed. See your surgeon for an exam to check your healing status. Rarely scarring and narrowing can occur at the surgical site.

Rectal discharge: Rectal discharge may be indication of colitis and may require endoscopy for proper diagnosis. A diet high in fiber may change the caracter of your stool. Acidophilus may restore your normal flora

Clear anal mucus discharge 2X a week, with or without a bowel movement. No pain. Had a normal colonoscopy 2 years ago. Any suggestions?

Clear anal mucus discharge 2X a week, with or without a bowel movement. No pain. Had a normal colonoscopy 2 years ago. Any suggestions?

Many causes: This is generally due to normal mucous production which is abnormally expressed (poor sphincter tone, anal blockage) vs abnormal mucous production due to infection or inflammation. Intermittent nature (2X a week) is reassuring. Presume no blood. Would probably at least do flexible sigmoidoscopy even though colonoscopy only 2 years ago. See your provider when able.

Infected Fistula: It sounds like you have an infected anal fissure or fistula and need to see a cool-rectal specialist for examination, treatment and possible surgical evaluation.
