An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. It is important to remember that this is a screening test and a positive result only indicates more testing may be warranted. No blood test is perfect, and getting to a diagnosis is usually much more complex than drawing blood and looking at a number ...Read more
No: This result is weakly positive or even normal in some individuals, positive ANA screen doesn't confirm a disease, it rather complements clinical signs and symptoms, other specific tests, imaging /tissue studies need to be performed in the context of the whole clinical picture. Seek a rheumatologist input if you're in doubt, wish you wellness ...Read more
What do you suggest if I have been told i tested with a positive ANA homogenous pattern and have a titer of 1:160. What exactly does?
Nothing: This blood test has no value by itself. It is positive in many people with no related disease. It can also be present in lupus and other autoimmune diseases, many infections, cancer, inflammatory vowel disease, and many relatives of people with autoimmune disease. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is a high ANA titer of 1:640 or > and symptoms present for ctd early in diagnosis likely mean a bad prognosis or not necessarily?
Not necessarily: The ANA titer will not correlate with disease activity. Your symptoms or what organ systems that are involved early in the disease course can sometimes be predictive of how the disease will be. If you have severe organ involvement requiring medications such Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) that can sometimes be associated with a more worse prognosis. I hope that helps. ...Read more

Appear normal: It is very difficult to interpret lab results without knowing the clinical picture of the persone to whom these values are attached however it would seem that all of the results given are normal the low titre of ANA may be of no clinical importance but, again, need to know all clinical information about the person. ...Read more

Only a screening: An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. ANA titer: this as with many tests needs to be taken in context. We need to know why it was taken. What your symptoms are, what other tests were done, what the pattern showed, etc. Giving us one lab result and asking us what it means is like giving us one word from the bible and asking us what page it came from. The doctor who ordered the test is the best one to tell you or refer you to one who can. ...Read more
Caution: There are a huge number of labs in rheumatology, but especially with low-titer ANA and lowish-titer ribonucleoprotein, nobody's going to make the call of mixed connective tissue disease or anything else without a strongly supportive history and physical exam. Whenever arthritis is a consideration, a good trusting relationship with a rheumatologist is your best asset. ...Read more

What is significance of ANA of 1:640 vs 1:320or 1:80.I know what the dilution means, but does higher titer even make a difference in clinical picture?
ANA titer matters.: ANA, or anti-nuclear antibody, is a a sensitive and specific test for systemic lupus erythematosus ONLY at high titer >1:320. Up to one in ten HEALTHY women can have a positive low-titer ANA, 1:40 or 1:80, which does NOT indicate lupus. Only a high-titer ANA can be used to diagnose lupus. To measure clinical activity in lupus, a different antibody called anti-double stranded DNA is measured. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Further testing: A positive ANA may not be significant. First of all why was the test done. If it was done for joint pain it will mean more then if a physiciab did one as a part of an annual physicial. Certainly, we are may be more concerned based on the value but also the pattern of the ana. The titer may mean an autoimmune disease is present based on the complaints, physical exam, and the values of other tests. ...Read more
See details: A positive screen means nothing. You need a titer to know if the test is truly positive. A positive can be seen in numerous diseases and even in normals. The result needs to be correlated with the clinical picture. ...Read more
