Many people say positive ANA means nothing as many people without lupus can have that. Why is it done to screen for lupus then- if it means nothing?

Many people say positive ANA means nothing as many people without lupus can have that. Why is it done to screen for lupus then- if it means nothing?

Titer: If ANA is detected only in serum diluted to about 40 fold, it does not mean a whole lot. However, if it still present after the serum has been diluted 160 fold, it does mean auto-immune response. In other words, the strength of ANA matters. Ana positive 1.80 speckled, what does that mean?

After testing I have ANA positive and rnp positive (1.4). What could this mean? ?

Context: If the titers are both 1:4 and you do not have obvious lupus or mixed connective tissue disease, then i'd bet they mean little or nothing. Diagnosis in rheumatology is based on history and physical exam, with labs just for confirmation. ...Read more

I know you get this a lot, but i had ANA positive 1:80 speckled. I kind or know that these can be a false positive. What dose the flag a & range n mean?

ANA titer matters.: ANA, or anti-nuclear antibody, is a a sensitive and specific test for systemic lupus erythematosus ONLY at high titer >1:320. Up to one in ten HEALTHY women can have a positive low-titer ANA, 1:40 or 1:80, which does NOT indicate lupus. Only a high-titer ANA can be used to diagnose lupus. To measure clinical activity in lupus, a different antibody called anti-double stranded DNA is measured. ...Read more
