Ana (Definition)

An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. It is important to remember that this is a screening test and a positive result only indicates more testing may be warranted. No blood test is perfect, and getting to a diagnosis is usually much more complex than drawing blood and looking at a number ...Read more

Pos ana-- lupus symptoms but more celiac with bloating, blister like skin rash.. What should I do? Tests?

What has been done: To answer your physician needs to know what has been done. The questions you ask can be clarified by your laboratory studies. Because a positive ANA is a beginning and as you ask more tests are necessary. You and your physician can best approach this by looking at what test you have now and what test you need later. ...Read more

After positive Ana1:80 antism 13 then to negative Ana?Still lupus?urobilinogen 3, still sick with symptoms esp pluerisy for months

After positive Ana1:80 antism 13 then to negative Ana?Still lupus?urobilinogen 3, still sick with symptoms esp pluerisy for months

Clinical correlation: The anti-nuclear antibody titer not only fluctuates, but is also prone to lab error. The urobilinogen pad on the urine test is also fraught with pitfalls. If the anti-Sm was a tube test and the level is clearly in the lab's positive range, consider that it's most likely that you have lupus but that it may have gone quiescent. Try to exercise hard; consider distance swimming, for fibromyalgia. ...Read more

7 yr s of unexpland body pain rashes misscarraiges fatigue lung nodules. Now for 6 mos strait hip shoulder + chest pain. And a + ANA lab. Lupus?

Maybe: Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease in which the body is attacking its own tissue. Lupus is famous for affecting different people in different ways. The effects can be so different from person to person that it does not even look like they have the same diagnosis. ANA is only a screening test that tells us more tests are needed. See a rheumatologist! ...Read more

See your MD: The positive ANA and lupus anticoag may be associated with potential for blood clotting issues and clearly represent autoimmune disease potentially, of which the hypothyroidism may be a part. You must be seen by an hematologist or immunologist and be evaluated for systemic autoimmune issues. the elevated sed rate is also associated with inflammatory disease. Feel better! ...Read more

I have a positive ana, positive lupus anticoagulant, 386 value for microsomal antibodies. C3 of 113, C4 of 53. A rash on face could it be lupus?

Yes: If the rash fits the butterfly or discoid rash or the subacute lupus skin lesion. ANA titer is usually high in lupus; you have not listed yours. The c3 and c4 are markers of disease activity and famously nonspecific. Don't try to self-diagnose; your age of 54 is a bit high for new-onset lupus though it's not impossible. ...Read more

I was tested for lupus ANA came back positive but sed rate was low could me taking 800mg motrin first have affected that?

Doubtful: The sed rate is not a totally reliable index of inflammation especially if it is down at a commercial lab. The CRP is a better index. A weak NSAID such as Motrin is unlikely to be effective. Finally the ANA is also not specific for lupus. ...Read more
