I've been taking amoxicillin for a week now and woke up with itching red hives all over my entire body. Its spreading and itches bad. What to do?
I have had a previous reaction (hives) to ceclor. I was recently prescribed amoxicillin and had a severe reaction after 5 days. Is this a rare event?
You are obviously allergic to penicillin. Penicillins and cephalosporins are related and if you are allergic to one you are risk of being allergic to both. It is very important that you don't take medicines of either group in the future and may consider a medalert bracelet.
It isn't that rare. ...Read more

Amoxicillin given to: A child or adolescent who has a sore throat ; fever caused by infectious mononucleosis causes a very " measly-looking" (morbilliform) rash about 100% of the time, to the point that it's pretty much diagnostic of " mono". Many drugs can cause a morbilliform rash. For further information ; photos, see http://dermnetnz. Mobify. Me/reactions/morbilliform. Html. I've not heard of "infused hives". ...Read more
Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to amoxicillin after using it several times previously? I'm on day 4 of 875mg/2x daily and today I am breaking out in hives. What should I do?
Medicine allergies: Yes. The thing to understand about allergic reactions is that the body generally has to have had prior exposure before an allergic response. It is actually rare to have a true allergy to something with the first exposure. You should stop the medicine and notify your physician to get a different antibiotic and document the allergy. ...Read more
Antihistamines: Looks like you are allergic to one of the components of augmentin. Most likely the penicillin group of drugs, but even could be the clavulenic acid too. You need to tell future doctors, nurses and facilities, and carry a card or bracelet with this info-allergic to Augmentin. Treatment is antihistamines such as Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) prednisone for severe cases. ...Read more
Recently prescribed Zantac (ranitidine) and Zyrtec for hives on my face from amoxicillin. How often should I take and how soon see results?
Can amox-clav cause small amount of hives? And should I be worried? I've taken amoxicillin before with no reaction. I'm already allergic to levaquin (levofloxacin).
Hives: Any medication can cause hives. If you think the medicine is the cause of the hive it should be stopped immediately. Allergic reactions happen on subsequent exposures to a medication and not usually on the first exposure. Stop the medicine, take antihistamines. Report the reaction to your doctor. Seek immediate care for shortness of breath, facial swell, trouble swallowing. ...Read more
Itchy hives from amoxicillin allergy - do I need to do anything or just take claritin (loratadine)?
Depends on severity: Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec will help with the itching; a more severe rash may require treatment with prednisone. In most cases, the rash simply goes away within a few days of stopping the antibiotic. Treatment for the rash simply depends on how badly it bothers you. At any rate, you need to stop the antibiotic and notify your doctor if you get a rash while taking it. ...Read more

Hives: Illness or allergic reactions can both cause rashes in children. Since she is on amoxicillin, it very likely is an allergic reaction to the medication. I would stop the medication and give her benedryl. You should contact your daughter's pediatrician to see if they want to change medications or want to see her first. ...Read more
Will strawberry flavored amoxicillin cause hives in a breastfed baby with a strawberry allergy? He has taken bubble gum one 2 times before no issue
Can Be Either:: May be the baby is developing Amoxicillin allergy, or possibly strawberry related. Remember, somebody has to be exposed to an allergen initially to react to it on further exposure. With subsequent exposure, the allergic reaction becomes stronger and severe to become life threatening. Be careful next time, talk to baby's doctor. ...Read more
2 yr old had amoxicillin reaction, hives and itchy puffy rash. Doctor perscribed omnicef (cefdinir) in its place. Is this a safe alternative for my daughter?

I'm on albuterol (nebulizer) and augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) for upper respiratory junk! Which is morelikely to be causing my increasing clusters of migrating hives?
Hives: Eruptions of this nature may signify an acute hypersensitivity propensity which could become life-threatening. Although suspect the Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is the more likely culprit, would see the doctor who prescribed these asap and do not take any more of either until you see them. ...Read more
My 13month old broke out into hives a day after 1yr check up from shots, she also had last dosage of amoxicillin from ear infection. No fever?
Possible Amox rxn: Hives would be unlikely from the usual 1 year shots. It is more likely from the Amoxicillin. A reaction can occur even at the end of the course or once finished. You should review other possible new exposures and discuss this all with your child's doctor. Of course, if there is any difficulty breathing or swallowing with the hives, you should take your child to the emergency room ASAP. ...Read more
Is it possible to develop an allergic reaction to an antibiotic while you're taking it? I'm on my second week of amoxicillin and this morning woke up with red bumps all over. I break out in hives with penicillin and sudafed which is why I ask. Thanks.
Amoxicillin is very closely related to penicillin. People with a true penicillin allergy like you (causing hives) should not take amoxicillin. I would suggest stopping the medication and calling your doctor right away to find out what to do next. You may need medication to stop the allergic reaction and perhaps a different antibiotic, depending on the reason it was prescribed.
People have been known to show allergic symptoms after taking antibiotics for several days and even if they have taken the same antibiotic before and have not had problems.
I hope this answers your question. Thanks! ...Read more

I am taking amoxicillin 500mg for strep throat, my doctor prescribed prednisone as well. A week into my medication I broke into hives. Went to the doc?
Drug allergy: It is likely that you have become allergic to amoxicillin and need to stop it. Consult with doctor to find out whether you need a substitute. It is likely that you are allergic to penicillin as well and should consider consulting an allergist to confirm after you have recovered. Don't understand why prednisone was Rxd. ...Read more
14 mnth baby - rash, hives, some swelling after amoxicillin. Gave 2 doses prednisone at night, & benadryl (diphenhydramine). Today, swelling in feet, ear, eye. Normal?
Ear infection?: Most toddlers ear and upper respiratory infections are viral, and will resolve on their own by treating the symptoms-humidifier, saline spray...Vs having to deal with the side effects of an antibiotic allergy. Especially when the abx don't help at all. After two doses of pred and benadryl, (diphenhydramine) and there is still swelling. Back to the doc with you! Might need to go to allergist after this is all over. ...Read more
3-year old was on amoxicillin and clavulanate after a sore throat. She developed hives & swollen joints after10 days of antibiotics. What could it be?
This is most likely: An allergic reaction to the Augmentin (amox/clavulanate) that he was on. This is not uncommon and often occurs at the end of the treatment, or even once it's finished. You should also think about any other new exposures as possible causes. Viral illnesses can also cause this. You should definitely have his doctor check him and treat if indicated (sometimes antihistamine or steroid is used). ...Read more

What can I do if I took amoxicillin this morning and am itching all over and have a hive-like rash?
Can I get mono twice? I am having a hive reaction in my feet after being on amoxicillin for a week. I have already had mono once.
Drug rash: As you seem to know, amoxicillin often causes a rash in people who have mononucleosis. However, it also can cause an allergic rash without mono -- and an itchy rash (hives) usually means a true drug allergy. Stop the amoxicillin and contact the doctor who prescribed it. Good luck! ...Read more
