There : There has been much debate over this topic. Some doctors tell their patients to use a back-up method while on antibiotics, while others do not. Personally I do not advise my patient to use a back up while taking antibiotics, for me there is not enough scientific literature out there supporting any effect. If you suspect you may be pregnant (miss your next cycle) then obviously take a pregnancy test, but i suspect you are fine. Take care. ...Read more

I'm on Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) TID, Topriamate daily, and Nuvaring. Should I be concerned about the antibiotic or topiramate decreasing Nuvaring's effectiveness?

I'm on Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) TID, Topriamate daily, and Nuvaring. Should I be concerned about the antibiotic or topiramate decreasing Nuvaring's effectiveness?

Maybe: A liver enzyme known as CYP3A4 is more active when taking topiramate, and this results in faster metabolism of the Nuvaring hormone. This MAY decrease the contraceptive efficacy. Antibiotics affect contraceptive efficacy only for pill-contraceptives. One can trust the judgement of a gynecologist with experience using Nuvaring for patients on topiramate. ...Read more
