There : There has been much debate over this topic. Some doctors tell their patients to use a back-up method while on antibiotics, while others do not. Personally I do not advise my patient to use a back up while taking antibiotics, for me there is not enough scientific literature out there supporting any effect. I'm on Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) TID, Topriamate daily, and Nuvaring. Should I be concerned about the antibiotic or topiramate decreasing Nuvaring's effectiveness?
Maybe: A liver enzyme known as CYP3A4 is more active when taking topiramate, and this results in faster metabolism of the Nuvaring hormone. This MAY decrease the contraceptive efficacy.
