Amoxicillin Antibiotic Rash
Can augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) cause rashes and if so how long will they last after stopping the antibiotic?
Yes. Up to 2 weeks.: Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is Amoxicillin augmented with clavulanic acid. It enables Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) to kill bacteria resistant to amoxicillin. Like Amoxicillin Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) can cause an allergic rash - hives and angioedema usually appearing right after the 1st dose - or an Amoxicillin rash - red flat or raised spots that don't itch appearing on the 7-10th day of treatment. Once drug is stopped each rash is gone in 2 weeks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Penicillin Allergy: Penicillin antibiotics are the most common cause of drug allergies. Some people who are allergic to penicillin are also allergic to other closely related antibiotics, including cephalosporins, such as cephalexin, cefprozil, and cefuroxime. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about these antibiotics. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is there a difference between the headtotoe rash sometimes caused from the MMR shot and the amoxicillin anitbiotic rash on a 1year old?
YES: The MMR rash is a reaction to the contents of the vaccine and is not an allergic reaction. The rash from the amox is an allergic reaction and if your child is taking the drug you should stop the drug and see your md asap. If your child had the vaccine after starting the amox see your md anyway to be safe and sure of the cause. ...Read more
If i was taking amoxicillin for a week then broke out in a rash because i had mono, how long after i stop taking the anitbiotic will the rash go away?
A week or more: I've seen cases where the rash faded in about a week & some that were faintly visible for a bit longer. As long as any residual Amoxicillin is still being absorbed in the GI tract it can stimulate rash production after you stop the med. That is usually finished in a day or so after stopping. ...Read more
My 16 month old developed a full body rash after taking amoxycillin for pneumonia. Should i keep her off it in the future if she needs antibiotics?
I would: For most kids this is a cosmetic nuisance rather than a risk, but it could become more of a problem later. If ampicillin or its close relatives were the best selection for a serious illness, there are ways it can be used in a hospital setting. This involves a specialised desensitization/monitoring.Luckily we have many alternatives for common infections.Make sure the reaction makes it into the chart ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not only can, should!: I advise all my patients to take probiotics while on antibiotics. I advise everyone take Sacchromyces Boulardii (sold as FloraStor) and one with multiple strains of acidophilus/bifidus. Look for ones with at least 20 billion bacteria. Advanced Naturals is a quality line and Culturelle is also a good product. This will reduce odds of diarrhea & vaginal yeast. Take at start of meal. Continue after. ...Read more
See below: For a strep throat treatment is usually 10 days of penvk or amoxicillin. In penicillin allergic patients with streptococcal pharyngitis the macrolides-erythromycin, biaxin (clarithromycin) or zithromax as well as Clindamycin are effective. If the penicillin allergy was only a rash and not immediate hypersensitivity cephalosporin antibiotics are safe and effective. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Can you dissolve 500 mg of amoxicillin in tea? Or will this kill the antibiotic making it non-effective.
Amoxicillin: Suggest using water. Cannot find data about whether it will be destroyed by tea, but better not to try this. There is some interesting information suggesting the combination of caffeine and some penicillins may increase the efficacy of the drugs against staph aureus, but doubt this has clinical relevance. ...Read more
I'm 5 days into taking antibiotics for my cold (3 per day, 500mg amoxicillin) and I don't feel any better, is there anything else I can do?
Below: Many times the problem is a combination of bacterial and viral etiology The antibiotic will help with the bacterial component, but the viral part will just "run its course". This will take a few weeks, usually. Continue to drink lots of fluids to loosen any secretions that you may have, and continue taking the antibiotic to complete the full course given to you. ...Read more
