What's the correct dosage for amoxicillin and how much a day for my 3 1/2 year old. Weighing 37 pounds. She has strep.

Rx'd by physician?: Was the strep throat formally diagnosed by a physician? Strep should be diagnosed by a physician via a rapid test or culture, you don't want to treat with antibiotics for a viral pharyngitis. The physician would have prescribed the amoxicillin in the dosage that is correct. As a general rule, it is 40 mg/kg per day divided into 2-3 doses for a strep infection. Amount depends on concentration. ...Read more

My 36lb. 3 1/2 year old son was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml at a dosage of 8 mls. Twice a day for strep throat. I am concerned that the dosage is?

Dosage is fine: More than that can be given in other acute infections, although for a strep throat 5-6 ml /dose would suffice given your son's weight, but the extra 2-3 ml wouldn't be harmful, probably your son's doctor suspected an upper respiratory infection as well such as acute sinusitis. You may want to verify it with your doctor if you're concerned, otherwise continue till the follow up visit, good luck ...Read more

My 2 year old son is once again crying with ear pain. He just finished taking amoxicillin for another ear infection not two weeks ago. What should do?

Needs a recheck: Taking an antibiotic for an ear infection does not protect into the future. If he is symptomatic again, he may have another infection. The only way to know is to have his doctor examine him. In the meantime, use Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen as tolerated for pain. ...Read more

My daughter is on amoxicillin 9mL twice a day. She is 3 1/2 years old. How much time should there be between dosages?

Technically 12 hrs: Since it should be taken twice a day then technically every 12 hrs. However that can be difficult at times so you can aim for anywhere between 8-12 hrs apart given that amoxicillin can also be dosed 3x/day. ...Read more

Yes: Drugs are generally effective 1-2 years past their expiry dose. It sounds like a good plan in view of the weather. Make sure they are yours and you are not allergic to PCN. What are you taking them for? All the best and stay safe. ...Read more

Two year old had allergic reaction to amoxicillin. Dr replaced it with cefprozil. Instruct on cefprozil say not to take it if allergic to penicillin?

Old concern: The caution on cephalosporins if penicillin allergic dates back decades to how they were produced--there often was pcn in the cephalosporins as a byproduct. Even then, risk was rare and tiny. Now even smaller, and far better to not exclude two huge antibiotic categories at young age if don't need to. Keep an eye on child as with any medication, but should not pose a problem. ...Read more

Can a 4 1/2 year old take amoxicillin in pill form 250 mg?

My 2 year old has blister like pimples on his knees and elbows. He says they don't itch or hurt, he was taking augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) for an URI?

Rashes: Are best evaluated by being seen...Literally. Blister like pimples on elbows and knees could be molluscum conatgiosum...Can't tell without seeing. You don't say how long they have been there. Did they appear since he was on the medication or before? Could be a viral rash. Does not sound like a typical allergy rash from medication. Make an appointment with your physician for the best answer. ...Read more

My 2 years old baby girl had lymph nodes and mumps can I used the amoxicillin himox drops?

Mumps is a viral illness: Being that mumps is a viral illness the Amoxil (amoxicillin) will not help it. Lymph nodes are very common in children but most of the time are not significant. Giving your child and antibiotic just because there's a large lymph nodes is one of the problems that tends to lead to resistance and antibiotics. You really need someone to look at the child before you start giving antibiotics. ...Read more

Hi, my two year old (30 lb) daughter went to the doctor for a fever of 104.6. She was prescribed liquid ammoxicillan 50mg/ml dosed at two ML 2x/day. Is this dose right?

For what????: Antibiotics including amoxicillin are usually dosed by weight and condition. A bladder infection would be dosed lower than an ear infection. That said, I cannot remember ever using a dose that low for anything. My usual for an ear infection at her weight would be 600 mg twice a day, a bladder infection 350 mg twice a day. ...Read more

My son was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml, at 9ml twice a day. Is this a normal amount for a 38lbs 4-1/2 yr old boy? So about 720mg x2for 24hr perio

Yes: Years ago (two decades) the recommended dose would be less, but germ resistance has changed that. Now we dose based on type of problem and weight. The med is concentrated in urine, so we can get by with less for UTI, but for ears/sinuses/etc we give up to 80-90mg/kg/day which is where this dose fits. ...Read more

My almost 3 yr old has the start of pneumonia is on amoxil (amoxicillin) can my almost 2 yr old get it? Is pneumonia contagious

Not necessarily: But the organism causing the pneumonia may be contagious, even though it does not cause pneumonia in the sibling. Normal heart rate: This is a normal heart rate for a 5 and half years old child. Now a common reason for fast heart rate in children is fever, common colds and dehydration. Children tend to drink and eat less when they are not feeling well and eventually become dehydrated. Make sure that your child had adequate fluid intake, control fever if any with Tylenol (acetaminophen). if the problem persist, then consult with his doctor ...Read more
