M son was prescribed 20.5 ml 2 tmes a day. Amoxicillin 400/5 ml. He wEighs 93 lbs. Is this to high?
Maximum safe dosage: I usually recommend 90 mg/kg/day amoxil (amoxicillin) for otitis media which is what I assume he is being treated for. I recommend 12.5 ml two times per day max for otitis which is 1000mg twice per day for ten days. You should discuss with his provider to determine safest maximum dosage for your child. ...Read more
My son was given amoxicillin 400 mg/ 5 ml for strep. It says to give 20.5 ml 2 times a day. He wEighs 93 lbs is this safe?
Safe=yes, needed=no: This is a dose that I might use to get the meds into the thick muck of a sinus or middle ear infection but it is not needed to treat simple strep.10ml of this preparation 2X/day would be adequate therapy. If the doc saw an ear or sinus infection & didn't tell you, that's a different issue. Any excess med would exit though his kidneys within hours, he might be more likely to have loose stools. ...Read more

My son is ten and weighs 130 lbs. He was prescribed Amoxicillin 400 mg/5 ml suspension. 2 1/2 teaspoons once daily. Is this the correct dosage?
No: The standard dose of Amoxicillin is 25-50 mg/kg/24 hours divided into three (every 8 hours) or 2 (every 12 hours) doses per day. Your child is getting 1000 mg once a day. He should be getting between 800 and 1600 mg per dose twice a day. Perhaps the physician meant to write for 1, 000 mg twice a day and the RX was mistyped. ...Read more

Strep & amoxil dose: Current guidelines are 50mg/kg per dose with a 500mg per dose limit for twice a day dosing. Your daughter is 11 kg so her dose is 550 mg twice a day or 500 mg per dose due to dose limit - or 1.25 teaspoons per dose twice a day - a teaspoon is 5 ml. She was underdosed. Check with your doctor - she may need a strep culture to see if she's cured before giving additional meds. ...Read more
What is the correct ml dosage of ic amoxicillin 250mg/5ml suspension for a 3yr old that weighs 29lbs?
Check with doctor: Though there are standard dosages for infants and children based on weight regarding antibiotics it is best to check with the prescribing pediatrician since they may not be following those numbers strictly depending upon the situation & severity of infection being treated. It may be an error to simply follow a number based on weight unless you know that you're in step with the doctor's plans. ...Read more
My 8 year old daughter was prescribed 12.6 ML twice a day of amoxicillin 400MG / 5 ML suspension twice a day for pneumonia. Is this right?
Hard to say: The drug dose is based both on weight & problem. Without her weight it's hard to make specific recommendations. The estimated 55 lb 8 yo would get 80mg/kg/d with that schedule which is okay for a presumed pneumococcal pneumonia. You might be able to get by with less, but that germ has become more resistant over the past 2 decades. ...Read more

My child is 7 years old and he weighs about 53 pounds. He is on his 2nd round of amoxicillin 400 mg/ 5ml for strep throat. He takes 7.5 ml twice a day?
What is the question: There is no actual question here, so I will assume that your are asking if he is receiving the proper dose. For your child's weight and the reason for which the antibiotic is being prescribed, it is the proper dose. It should be given for the total time that it has been prescribed. ...Read more

My son is 7 & 65.2 lbs. Er gave us prescription for amoxicillin to treat strep throat. The dose is 12.5 ml twice a day. We have never taken so much.?
? drug concentration?: This medication usually comes in a 250/5 or 400/5 concentration. The concentration will determine the suggested dose. If 250/5 the 12.5ml would be 625mg given 2x daily witch is pretty routine. If 400/5 it would be 1000mg for 2x/d which would often be used to treat severe infections or resistant pneumococcus, not strep. ...Read more

My 10 yr old daughter who weighs 107 pounds has Otis media. She was prescribed 400mg/5ml amoxicillin and is to take 25 ml twice daily. Is this an extr?
Recommended 80 to 90 mg/kg/day orally in 2 divided doses. 107# / 2.2kg/lb = 48.6kg. 90mg/kg x 48.6kg = 4377mg. Two doses = 2188mg each. 2188mg / 400mg/5cc = 5.47 (5cc=1tsp). Therefore 5.47 x 5cc = 27.35cc OR about 25cc twice daily.
