Help please! is Accutane (isotretinoin) safe?

Depends: If you are a woman trying to conceive then absolutely not. Otherwise, it does have a significant number of potential adverse effects which need to be monitored. There are other, safer acne medicines but they may not be effective for you. It is not a medicine I use first line, but if the acne has not responded well to anything else, you have to weigh the risk vs. Benefit. ...Read more

Could antibiotic: Minomycin (in Australia), or minocycline hydrochloride, (prescribed as 3 month course - acne) cause suicidal tendencies/ depression?

Could antibiotic: Minomycin (in Australia), or minocycline hydrochloride, (prescribed as 3 month course - acne) cause suicidal tendencies/ depression?

Not likely, but: There've been some reported mood change effects - not common and severity is not mentioned. If you have a tendency toward this sort of intense depression, it might be wise to avoid this elective medication in favor of an alternative approach. Only you and your doctor know how crucial acne Tx is for you. One ting that may help is knowing it's not a meaningful depression - just short-term chemistry. ...Read more

Which acne medication is more effective with less side effects? Minocycline 100mg tablets or apo-doxy 100mg.

Is long-term remission from Accutane more likely on patients with milder acne as opposed to severe acne? (assuming the same cumulative dose is taken)

Is long-term remission from Accutane more likely on patients with milder acne as opposed to severe acne? (assuming the same cumulative dose is taken)

One moment....: Accutane is best reserved for severe / deep / cystic acne, as it's unpleasant and there are some risks. I usually see good results with systemic antibiotics & topical therapy for the milder stuff. However, it's extremely effective, and a long-term remission is the rule. Being a teen / young adult is rough enough without acne, and i believe it's well worth as many courses as you actually need. ...Read more

Differin vs azelex (azelaic acid) which one is better?

Is solodyn (minocycline) safe with accutane?

Not Recommended : Both medications can cause pseudotumor cerebri, and when taken together the risk of this is much higher. It is reversible, but i still never prescribe both Accutane and Minocycline (solodyn is a version of minocycline) together. If an antibiotic is needed while on accutane, I use a different antibiotic that is not associated with pseudotumor. ...Read more

Which is a safer, lower side effect profile drug, topamax (topiramate) or oxcarbazapine (in general terms, obv individuals vary)?

Which is a safer, lower side effect profile drug, topamax (topiramate) or oxcarbazapine (in general terms, obv individuals vary)?

Don't 2nd guess: Neither is w/o risk and they are Rx'd for different (w/ overlap) conditions. You need to work w/ your Dr on selecting the best for you - say clearly that safety is impt to you. Know what they expect it to for your condition. Side EFX are pretty similar for both - your other health issues might be the swing vote. ...Read more

Safe stuff: It's an antibiotic so you're not going to use it as your sole therapy. Topical benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid and/or salicylic acid needs to be used in conjunction with this stuff. If your disease is relatively mild, you'll probably get a good result. Best wishes. ...Read more

Which is more effective, combining tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide or tretinoin and erythromycin?

Is topical spironolactone (2%) safe for mpb? Is it effective? Can systemic absorption occur?(coz its 50-75 mg topical application in paraben vehicle)

Topical Spironolacto: The literature on systemic absorption of topical sprironolactone is a bit unclear. Small studies in lab rodents showed no absorption, but there are numerous anecdotal entries on hair loss blogs where users attest to side effects which point towards systemic absorption, including falling testosterone levels. Monitor your use carefully to see if you are an "absorber.". ...Read more

Any DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS of long term (TOPICAL) isotretinoin/erythromtcin use on the skin? Like premature aging? Been using it on/off 11 yrs for acne.

I have never heard: of topical isotretinoin(that is accutane) do you mean tretinoin (or retin A)? Topical retinoic acid will not hurt and can help as it stimulates new collagen and thickens the epidermis. Topcial erythromycin is just a topical antibiotic. It won't age your skin but may stop working. Hope that helps ...Read more

Is anyone aware of any results using doxycycline 100 mg. bid for 3 months for pulmonary fibrosis? Doxycycline affects matrix metaloproteinases in ipf

IPF: A key feature of IPF is the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix and basement membrane disruption that may be at least in part due to an imbalance between secreted matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors.Doxycyline, an MMP inhibitor, was observe to decrease fibrosis, inhibiting MMPs. 2 small studies done in India have favorable outcomes although not statistically significant ...Read more
