Ammonia smelling stools can be attributed to bacteria overgrowth or nitrogen being insufficiently digested or improperly metabolized. When food is insufficiently digested, the non-absorbed food can then become food for harmful bacteria, or just putrefy, in the gut. Either of these leads to toxins being released in the body.

Curious

This could be due to a fistula between the bowel and bladder allowing urine to pass in to the stools. This is a surgical problem. Rarely liver disease can cade this. Time to see the doctor!

Bacteria

Ammonia in the gut is produced by bacteria; if you have a strong ammonia smell, it may be secondary to chronic bacterial overgrowth. Alternatively, and more rarely, there could be a fistula from bladder to bowel (you would likely have problems with UTIs regularly then) or much more rarely, advanced liver disease.

Maybe

If the diarrhea is mild then it may be antibiotic-associated diarrhea from change in the normal flora of the GI tract. Probiotics will often help with this. If the diarrhea is severe, watery and malodorous then c diff is a possibility.

What would make your feces constantly smell like ammonia regardless of what you ate? My serum ammonia levels are normal.

Answered by:

Ammonia Smell

The most likely cause is a change in your intestinal bacterial flora. However, is it possible that the smell is actually from your urine? You can easily check. If not, try a probiotic mixture to "correct" your but bacterial population and see if that makes a difference. There are some other more serious conditions that may be at play, including liver and kidney problems, so I would follow up w/ MD
