I am taking amitriptyline but the medication hasn't been working for the past 26 days. Am I able to take a migraine tablet along with this medication?

Probably: It sounds like amitriptyline was prescribed for headache. This is a prevention medication that will not take away all headaches but can help decrease the frequency. If your doctor also prescribed an immediate relief headache medicine, then you can take it along with the amitriptyline. ...Read more

I take 150 mg. Amitriptyline at night for anxiety and depression. Does drinking caffeine takes away the benefits of the medication?

I take 150 mg. Amitriptyline at night for anxiety and depression. Does drinking caffeine takes away the benefits of the medication?

Can add to anxiety: Caffeine doesn't alter the antidepressant effect of Elavil (amitriptyline), but it can cause or worsen anxiety. So in that sense it could counteract the effect of the medication. Low to moderate amounts of caffeine shouldn't be a problem unless you're fairly sensitive to it, but on general principles I advise anxious patients to minimize caffeine. ...Read more

My doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline 50mg at night time and Phentermine 15 mg in am. Are these two medications safe to take at these times?

Why amitriptyline?: I'm curious why this was prescribed since it causes drowsiness with other known side effects opposite of phentarmine. I'm assuming it's for depression in this particular case. Please review further of your medication with your doctor. ...Read more

Why did my doctor prescribe me elavil (amitriptyline) for fibromyalgia when I said I didn't want more medication and I just asked for a referral to a chiropractor?

Not a bad choice: I don't know why your doctor prescribed medication when you told him you wanted a referral to a chiropractor. Mds and chiropractors operate from differing world views, so it is not often you'll find an md willing to refer to a chiropractor. There is no evidence greater than anecdotal report that chiropractic will help your fibromyalgia. There is evidence that medication can help with the pain. ...Read more

I am taking 12.5 mg of amitriptyline as needed for sleep. Average twice a week. Is this drug okay to use occasionally?

No real problem: Amitriptyline is often used "off label" due to side effect of drowsiness. You are on a very low dose, and certainly at no risk. Would inform your doctor and discuss, but I would not worry about the anti-cholinergic side effects from such a low dose. ...Read more

Can you please tell me how the drug amitriptyline causes constipation?

Can you please tell me how the drug amitriptyline causes constipation?

Bowel activity: Your bowel activity is regulated via autonomic tone, and neurotransmitter balance is part of this. Cholinergic impulses can make your bowel contract and move stool along. If anything disturbs these impulses, your bowel will become sluggish. Amitriptylene has strong anti-cholinergic properties -- so at a high enough dose, your bowel activity slows down. The result can be constipation. ...Read more
