Hi, my mom was prescribed Taizanidine 2 mg and Amitriptyline 5 mg..she got them for pain in lower abdomen in left side. Well do u think there could be another reason for antidepressant prescription?

Pain and insomnia: Difficult to say, but Amitriptyline is commonly used in pain management and also for insomnia. It is not a pain medication, but can be helpful in managing pain. The dose of 5 mg is not generally sufficient to treat depression, so appears it appears the prescribing Dr. was targeting other symptoms. Hope this is helpful. ...Read more

Get second opinion: The combination could readily backfire, as the Elavil (amitriptyline) and Ativan can both cause anti-cholinergic side effects, and additive sedation, lethargy, and dizziness. No.: St. John's Wort hastens the breakdown of Amitriptyline and taking both will be counterproductive. If you still need something to make you feel positive, go back to your doctor and have him reevaluate your medications. ...Read more

No real problem: Amitriptyline is often used "off label" due to side effect of drowsiness. You are on a very low dose, and certainly at no risk. Would inform your doctor and discuss, but I would not worry about the anti-cholinergic side effects from such a low dose. ...Read more
