I'm prescribed 10mg Ambien to take every night, and been on it for 5+ months. I've built up a tolerance, is there a higher dose I can take?
No: Ambien 10 mg is the maximum dose. The problem with ALL the tranquilizer type sleep meds is you build a tolerance to them and they don't work after a while. This is why it's best not to take these every night. Taking them every 2-3 nights works better. Alternative meds that could help with sleep are Trazodone, Remeron, or Vistaril. Yes: The studies would suggest not, but my experience with patients says yes. Ambien only treats difficulty falling asleep which can be due to many different problems.
