Nothing lasting.: Nothing really. Most people say that even after a week , it fails to put them to sleep. When you discontinue, there maybe a rebound insomnia. Some people who take it actually experience a somnambulistic effect and can do things, eat in bed, drive, cook and do not remember they did it. No: Ambien 10 mg is the maximum dose. The problem with ALL the tranquilizer type sleep meds is you build a tolerance to them and they don't work after a while. This is why it's best not to take these every night. Taking them every 2-3 nights works better. Alternative meds that could help with sleep are Trazodone, Remeron, or Vistaril. These often are not addicting/do not cause tolerance. ...Read more

Yes: The studies would suggest not, but my experience with patients says yes. Ambien only treats difficulty falling asleep which can be due to many different problems. It doesn't treat the underlying cause, eg depression, anxiety, adhd, drug abuse etc. You need to treat the underlying cause otherwise Ambien will either not work or make the problem worse. ...Read more
