No best medicine: I am not sure that there is any specific study indicating the absolute best medication for sleep for the collective of patients with bipolar disorder. Among the likely candidates however there are ziprasidone, olanzapine, and quetapine and specifically these medications also have a characterized capacity to treat mood disturbances attributable to bipolar disorder. ...Read more

Good medicines that work for insomnia. I've tried ambien, (zolpidem)ambien CR, restoril, metrazapine, silenor, trazadone, also OTC meds and nothing seems to work?
Ambien (zolpidem): Zolpidem (Ambien (zolpidem)) is indicated for short-term treatment of insomnia with difficulty of sleep onset. Ambien (zolpidem) produces tolerance and dependence when used long-term. Although trazodone is efficacious for sleep maintenance difficulties, its use in insomnia is off-label and is associated with cognitive and motor impairments. Long-term treatment with medication alone is not the optimal treatment strategy ...Read more
What sedatives work best Ambien cr, sonata, (zaleplon) lunesta, rozerem or silenor? I take restoril but doesn't work. I can't sleep unless I take an extra seroquel.
Don't get dependent: Taking more and more sleep meds is a dangerous path. Figure out why you can't sleep; see your primary care md first. Eliminate caffeine; don't exercise too late in the evening; stay away from your cell phone and other bright screens just before going to bed. Don't go to bed until you're sleepy. May need referral to sleep lab. Try to get off all sleep meds. Good luck! ...Read more

For sleep, but....: Silenor is a sleep medication but it works very differently from ambien. Silenor's chemical name is doxepin, this has been used as an antidepressant for many years (at much higher doses 100-300mg/day vs 3-6mg for silenor). It works similar to OTC sleep aids like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and doxylamine by blocking histamine. Zolpidem works in a more complex way on hormones that regulate sleep. ...Read more

My partner is a 50 yr old male with good health that takes no medication. He has chronic sleep issues, is it safe for him to take Ambien (zolpidem) every night?
Ambien (zolpidem): Nope. Not at all. This highly addicting and dangerous medication does not provide good restorative sleep. It is something that knocks a person out but does not allow all the necessary stages of sleep. Think of the drug that killed michael jackson. The same principles apply. Ambien (zolpidem) will knock one out but cause brain disease over time given the lack of good sleep. ...Read more

What are some good sleep medications besides Ambien (zolpidem)? After a cake for a while it stops working. I've tried several others and at the same affect. They work really good in the beginning but fade off. Any suggestions
Tolerance: Lunesta (eszopiclone) is a good alternative. Medications like Ambien are addictive and people develop tolerance to it. I started prescribing relaxation apps to patients of mine to help them sleep and it has worked great. 60% of them quit their sleeping medications completely. I would recommend white noise at night also to try to stop using them. ...Read more

The : The recent study you are most likely alluding to do not establish an actual cause and effect relationship. It is not known if the sleep medications cause increased risk or if people who are at increased risk are just the people who tend to use these medications. However, Ambien (zolpidem) increases interluken 8, which stimulates cancer growth. Regardless, congratulations for successfully coming off a sleep medication after being on it for so long. I took 4 ambien, (zolpidem) 3 klonopin and 3 zestoretic just so I could sleep, was it safe to mix those medications?
I have insomnia and tried numerous medications. I am now taking 100mg of seroquel with 10 mg of Ambien (zolpidem) and it is working great. Any problems w/this.
The main question: Is why you have insomnia in the first place. What evaluations have you had for this? There are many causes -- and although the seroquel and Ambien (zolpidem) may knock you out, this does not get to the root cause of your problem. Also, Ambien (zolpidem) is habit-forming, and in time you'll need more medication for the same effect. You might consider seeing a sleep medicine physician for evaluation. ...Read more

Therefore, you need to find out if she is dosing her medication precisely per doctors orders, then discuss any potential consequences of therapy with that physician. ...Read more
