I am 18 years old and I have bipolar disorder. Will I have to be on medication for the rest of my life?

I am 18 years old and I have bipolar disorder. Will I have to be on medication for the rest of my life?

No one can say: Certainly medication is needed in most bipolar disorders. Severity varies, response to medication also is not always predicatble and the course of the disorder is probably the most unpredictable, especially in adolescents and children. Like anything else in life you are wisest to deal with things like that on a day to day basis. There are no guarantees about the future and no cystal ball. ...Read more

Im at school now and about to get braces for 2.5-3 yrs.The thought of wearing during uni is making me so ill and depressed- best years of my life gone?

It's understandable: Wishing the timing could have been different makes sense, but do try not to let it spread into your mood or other functioning. A bright, friendly, generally healthy guy with braces is a winner over a depressed, miserable guy with braces, right? Also, while college years can be wonderful - most of us oldies do not think they were the best. Counseling may help - your future you will thank you. Best! ...Read more

I am a med student of first year, and i want to know which is the minimun time i have to sleep to develope well, be awake and survive, i really want the minimun?

Highly variable: The amount of sleep you need to perform at your best varies from person to person. Also, it's possible to "get away" with less sleep for shorter periods of time, but getting insufficient sleep has a cumulative negative effect. The amount needed varies from more than the average 8 hours to much less for a very few who have a different genetic requirement. Mid afternoon sleepiness is a good monitor. ...Read more

Good afternoon you all. Well I have anxiety disorder for 4 years. I have to deal it in the rest of my life? Thank you

maybe not: I am not sure what you have tried therapeutically, but would recommend a psychologist trained in behavioral modification and biofeedback training which is sometimes very successful in dealing with most "anxiety disorders". Many will disagree, but I am not in favor of using anxiolytic medication alone, or even at all. They causes a false sense of security and can have significant adverse effects. ...Read more

What are the symptoms of being depressed as a teen I am sad all the time and i usually ask myself why I am alive

What are the symptoms of being depressed as a teen I am sad all the time and i usually ask myself why I am alive

Hi. : Hi. You don't sound very happy. I cannot make a diagnosis. However, you might have depression. Feeling sad and questioning why you are alive can be symptoms of depression. If you have depression, you would be likely to feel unhappy (sad, angry, irritable, scared) for much of the time. You might be doing more poorly in school. Sleeping too much or too little and eating too much or too little can also occur. Isolating from friends, losing your motivation and not experiencing pleasure are also common. You might feel helpless or hopeless; or maybe you don't like yourself as much. Feeling guilty when you don't need to can happen. Some times a person who is depressed, might have thoughts that they want to be dead or thoughts of killing themself. Please let your parents know how you are feeling. They can have a doctor evaluate you, to see if you are experiencing the ups and downs of a pre-teen or if this is more serious. Additionally, most schools have counselors that you can see for free. You said that you ask yourself why you are alive. If you feel like you want to kill youself, you need to let your parents know right away and then you will need to get emergency help. If you do have depression, you are taking the first step to getting well by writing in this question. This can get better. Take care. ...Read more

Will I have to take medication for the rest of my life if I have bipolar disorder?

Will I have to take medication for the rest of my life if I have bipolar disorder?

Maybe: It depends on the severity of your condition and what happens when there is an exacerbation of your condition. If you only buy a few extra things every so often when you have mild manic episodes, that is different then if you every five years you try and drive the car over a cliff. Many w/ bipolar d/o do best if they avoid antidepressants long term and try to maintain with mood stabilizers. ...Read more

Hello doctor , i just want to know what should i do when i m feeling tired all the time , and for the information i spend almost half of the day sleep?

Start with doctor: There are many causes for fatigue and excessive sleeping. See your pcp for exam, appropriate testing and guidance. Write down meds you take including OTC, any alcohol/drug/caffeine/tobacco use, current stresses and about when problem started. First rule out medical causes for your fatigue. If all is normal, ask for referral to a mental health professional to assess for depression. Hope this helps. ...Read more

My legs are so restless at night so i find it difficult to sleep. This started a few years ago. The rest of my health issues are under control.

Restless legs: You could have restless legs syndrome. A neurologist or sleep specialist may be able to help you with evaluation and effective treatment. You list anxiety and confusion as symptoms also, but no medications -- some medications can worsen restless legs. Hoping you'll consider seeing a neurologist/sleep doctor & informing him/her about all your health conditions and medications too. Be well, . ...Read more

I suffer from extreme panic disorder and constant anxiety. I am going to be forced into a situation where I will not be able to take my Meds for a period of time. How will cope and get through it?

What meds?: Many meds used to treat these problems can not be stopped suddenly without making you feel even worse and can be potentially dangerous. Talk to the doc who prescribes your meds about the safest way to stop them. Talk to your therapist, too, about maximizing the use of your coping strategies (hopefully you have been given some). ...Read more

Post-traumatic stres: Your symptoms sounds like it's possible you're dealing with post-traumatic stress. This is very uncomfortable for you, yet recovery is possible. Sleep : Sleep requirements are a very personal thing. Most people need 7 to 8 hours of sleep in order to feel awake and fully functional the following day. There are those few select individuals who can get by with fewer hours of sleep and be unaffected by it and there are others that require more. The key is getting to a level of rem sleep, so called because it is noted that the eyes move rapidly. This is the most restful stage of sleep where the body recharges itself. Individuals cycle into and out of rem sleep several times a night. This is why it is important to have a sufficient amount of time asleep in order for the body to recover from a days activities. The most important aspect of sleep is to maintain a regular sleep and wake pattern seven days a week by staying on a consistent sleep schedule. Follow the link for information regarding good sleep habits. ...Read more
