If I start taking lopid (gemfibrozil), will I have to stay on it forever?

Not Necessarily: Lipid medications are used to treat a defined cholesterol or triglyceride disorder. If the lipid disorder is the result of another treatable medical condition (e.g., hypothyroidism, diabetes, etc.) then treatment of these conditions, as well as improvement in diet and exercise, can lessen or eliminate the need for lipid medications.

NOT TOGETHER: Do not use Simvastatin and Gemfibrozil together. Gemfibrozil increases the availability of simvastatin, and can when used together increase the risk of muscle related side effects. The fda has recently changed the labeling for these meds and does not recommend using them together. Used individually they can each be useful for different types of lipid disorders. Gemfibrozil can lower triglycerides.

My tri-glyceride level is high and I am taking gemfibrozil. What diet should I follow?

My tri-glyceride level is high and I am taking gemfibrozil. What diet should I follow?

Low fat, sugars, alc: Tgs can be high because of genetic predisposition, obesity (metabolic syndrome-assoc w/low hdl, high sugar); diets high in fat (tg), alcohol, and carbohydrates (especially simple sugars) can increase tgs. If overweight-lose weight. Very high tg >800-1000 fasting, can cause pancreatitis. Omega 3 fatty acids (marine oils) may help lower tgs.
