Can oral leukoplakia be scrapped off? If im able to scrap it off then is it oral leukoplakia? Not red or discolored underneath. Side under tongue

Can't scrape it off: Leukoplakia cannot be scraped off although scraping at it could change its appearance somewhat and perhaps lead to that illusion. Oral thrush can be scraped off and some forms of hairy tongue can be significantly altered by scraping. ...Read more

Can oral leukoplakia be wiped or scrapped off?

Can oral leukoplakia be wiped or scrapped off?

Not so easy: Leukoplakia may appear stuck on the mucosal surface but it is deeply attached, so it can not be wiped out. But it can be treated by your doctor. Go see a head and neck surgeon who may use medical or surgical treatments to control/remove it as it is a precancerous condition. Been told it usually takes decades of smoking before problems begin. So does that make it highly unlikely to have oral leukoplakia by 25? 4 pack years

Been told it usually takes decades of smoking before problems begin. So does that make it highly unlikely to have oral leukoplakia by 25? 4 pack years

Told wrong...: It is an individual variable as how long your body can resist damage from exposure to toxins/poisons. There are known cases of oral cancer and death resulting from only a few years of tobacco use. Why take the risk to see what your body will tolerate? If a dentist noticed oral leukoplakia would they 100 percent tell you? Ive had white film on my tongue for years but go to dentist every 6 months

If a dentist noticed oral leukoplakia would they 100 percent tell you? Ive had white film on my tongue for years but go to dentist every 6 months

We hope so: White film on tongue is white film on tongue, not likely to be leukoplakia. You should be able to scrape or brush this off with floss, tongue scraper or brush (stick tongue out, place whatever on tongue near back and then pull tongue back in mouth). Leukoplakia will not wipe/scrape off and looks more like white adherent skin - think what a callous looks like after swimming. See Dentist if needed. ...Read more

Ive smoked on and off for 8 years. What are the chances of having oral leukoplakia(pre malignant lesion in mouth) by the age of 25? Would this be rare?

Ive smoked on and off for 8 years. What are the chances of having oral leukoplakia(pre malignant lesion in mouth) by the age of 25? Would this be rare?

Very real: This would not be rare at all. You have racked up 8 years times the amount per day (measured in packs = ppd) .So, at one ppd you have accumulated 8 pack years. Multiply that by 365 days times 20 cigarettes per pack and get the total of 58,400 smokes.Think heat plus chemicals times how long it takes to smoke one cig and that is how much exposure your mouth has had. Be sure to be checked. Smart=Quit ...Read more
