Alternative Treatments For Hsv 2
Are there any alternatives to valtrex (valacyclovir) suppressive therapy for hsv 2 outbreaks? What are the physical triggers of outbreaks? Weightlifting?
Recurrent herpes: Acyclovir (Zovirax (acyclovir) and generics) and famciclovir (Famvir) also are available, but valayclovir (Valtrex®) usually is best. Oral HSV1 outbreaks are often triggered by local injury (e.g. sunburn) or other infections (hence the names "cold sore" and "fever blister"). But there are no well documented triggers of genital HSV2 outbreaks, either physical or psychological; outbreaks are random. ...Read more
None, unless...: Unless there are some good, human research studies that show there is a definite beneficial effect with monolaurin, there is no need to use it for herpes. Testimonials and marketing hype do not count as research. Since monolaurin is not a real, fda-approved medication, one cannot be sure about the products for sale (may vary in purity, additives, effects, side effects, etc...). ...Read more
Is it true that there have been cases where patients have tested negative for hsv-2 after a year if treatment when they were previously hsv-2 positive?
It depends...: If the original test positive detected the virus from a genital area sore (culture or PCR), you definitely have HSV2 and your recent negative (blood?) test is false. If the first was a blood test, most likely that one was false and you may not have HSV2 after all. Maybe more to say if you would like to post a new question with details, including numerical results of blood tests (both HSV1 and 2). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Can a treatment to remove molluscum in genital area cause an outbreak in an hsv-2 positive person?
Does diet impact frequency of hsv 2 outbreaks? If suppressive therapy is taken, what time of day is best?
In addition to suppressive therapy, what else should a person do to reduce frequent hsv 2 outbreaks? What can be done to strengthen the immune system?
Sorry, not much: Unfortunately, no proved methods. Maintaining health (rest, exercise, balanced diet) is always good. Avoid things that seem to trigger oubreaks, but clear triggers are rare for genital HSV2; outbreaks are random and don't indicate immune system weakness. Suppressive therapy is the only thing that works reliably. Frequent "outbreaks" while on suppression usually turn out to not be herpes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
