Are there any non-invasive treatments for degenerative disc disease? I want to avoid surgery as long as i can. Is there anything non-invasive that can give me relief from my degenerative disc disease?

Meds/Shots/Surgery: First line--medications (advil, aleve, (naproxen) etc.--avoid opiates if you can!) as needed for pain relief, ergonomic adjustments at work (good seating posture/distance from computer, etc.), gentle neck exercises. A sequence: Degenerative discs leak fluid which sets up a significant inflammation with pain and sometimes dysfunction of sensory and functional nerves. Treatment includes rest, ice (not heat) and good physical therapy along with nsaids. Steroid injections can sometimes help. Just normal wear & tear that occurs w/ age -- it typically starts in the 2nd decade of life, everyone experiences this--equivalent to skin wrinkles (:degenerative skin disease"), gray hair ("degenerative hair disease"). DDD: Whomever told you that you have ddd may have missed the problem. Extreme pain in a young person from "ddd" is rare. If "ddd" is multiple levels, you have scheuermann's disease most likely. If single level, you likely have some sort of instability or stress fracture, infection, or other abnormality. Diagnosis critical: There don't seem to be many physicians who have skills in diagnosing back disease. Some rheumatologists and some physiatrists and some orthopedic surgeons, but the findings you describe are probably not the cause or related to the pain. ...Read more
