On Vagifem 10mg twice a week for many years too much $ now low on income-what's just as good for menopause symptoms?
Vaginal dryness: Vagifem is very good for vaginal dryness but not for other symptoms of menopause. The absorption from the vagina is too low to treat systemic symptoms. If you stop it and have vaginal dryness you could try over the counter vaginal moisturizers such as Prevaleaf Oasis or you could try prescription Estrogen cream like Premarin (conjugated estrogens) or Estrace ...Read more
The amount of estrogen that is absorbed into your circulation (and therefore helpful to your bones) is quite minimal with vagifem. That is both it's benefit (the estrogen stays local) and the limit (it doesn't get into the circulation).
So - vagifem will neither help nor hurt your osteoporosis.
Good luck! ...Read more

Vagifem: Like all medications, Vagifem has risks and benefits. It is a matter of balancing these. Benefits include improvement of vaginal health. You may need to discuss these with your doc, but many people do use vagifem long term. It is generally thought to be a safer than oral estrogens, but risks still may include a small increase in blood clot issues, dementia, and possibly uterine or breast cancer. ...Read more

How often can you use vagifem to treat symptoms of interstitial cystitis? 3 to 4 day intervals is not sufficient, also using Marvelon. Many thanks!
Atrophic Vaginitis: Vagifem is used to treat thinning of the vagina or off label for pH changes in the vagina. It can be used daily for 1-2 weeks and then twice weekly. Can vagifem (10mcg) raise your cancer risk if taken before menopause? Packet insert says only to be used after menopause.
No: There is no evidence that the use of estrogen prior to menopause can initiate cancer. If a patient has an undetected early malignancy of the breast then small doses of vaginal estrogen may to a minor degree stimulate those cells. The same thing holds true for tamoxifen which when used as an antiestrogen has estrogenic activity on the lining of the uterus and may help Ca formation. ...Read more

Strange combination: Marvelon + Vagifem is a bit of strange combination. Marvelon is a combination birth control pill used to prevent pregnancy. Vagifem is a Estrogen supplement used when menopause is affecting the vagina. If menopausal you shouldn’t need Marvelon and if premenopausal then you shouldn’t need Vagifem. I would have the bleeding evaluated and discuss the medication options. ...Read more
Prescribed Vagifem tablets for lichen sclerosis - can these vaginal tablets be absorbed into the blood? Not keen if they do as I'm only 26 and on pill
History of cystitis. Have been prescribed by gynecologist vagifem. (No other symptoms except bladder ones and pain) worked in first dose but nervous about estrogen. Not menopausal or peri menopausal probably.
Interstitial cystiti: Some sources believe that a thinning of the bladder wall associated with interstitial cystitis is due to a relative lack of estrogen systemically, and can be restored via vaginally administered estrogen - vagifem. Please discuss with your doctor if you have questions. I don't know if this means you are perimenopausal by definition, so you might want to check estrogen levels to be sure ...Read more
52 years; Using continuous marvelon and vagifem. Experiencing vaginal burning, no infections. Could I be using too much hormone or maybe prolapse?
Maybe: Marvelon is a birth control hormone that contains ethinyl estradiol whereas Vagifem contains estradiol. Ethinyl estradiol is five times more potent that estradiol, which is why it suppresses ovary function. You may be better served with natural hormones to deal with perimenopausal symtpoms and an IUD or other form of contraception to prevent pregnancy. ...Read more

Can Vagifem pessary 10mg (vaginal tablet) increase size of fibroids even after menopause? I am 69 and having a scan as they suspect fibroid increased!
Vagifem pessary: Any source of estrogen can increase the size of fibroids, but if you did not have problems with fibroids prior to menopause, it is not likely that a "10 mg. Vagifem" will stimulate fibroid growth to the point where one has symptoms or discomfort. The scan will determine the true cause of this. ...Read more

Recurrent UTIs: Tea is not likely to affect you adversely or provide benefit. Recurrent UTIs should be investigated. I am using vagifem twice a week to build up skin damaged by longstanding lichen sclerosis. Is hormone replacement therapy different than vagifem?
More comprehensive..: Vagifem twice a week is a gold standard, but depending on your age & whether or not you have had female surgery removing one or both of your ovaries, you should consider bhrt, ie, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, from a compounding pharmacy, on rx from your doctor. Beware of the former "gold standards" like premarin, (conjugated estrogens) provera, etc. Look into suzanne somers books, & a total cure. ...Read more
