Alternative To Benadryl For Itching
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) gives me hives, flushing. Want to try hydroxyzine for my chronic hives; is it related too strongly to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for me to be safe with it?
Can't predict: Antihistamines have a variety of effects. One man's benefit is another's side effect. Some are best for itching; others better at insomnia; others nausea and seasickness. Some don't like their drying effect. They cause difficulty passing urine, but help overactive bladders. There are eye effects in certain people. Hydroxyzine has been given for hives for decades; it can be very potent, so beware. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What can I do for an allergic reaction to lignocaine? Is Benadryl (diphenhydramine) safe to use for the reaction?
It depends: Whether or not Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is safe to use depends on what type of reaction you are having. Firstly, it is rare to have an allergic reaction to a local anesthetic. If you are having swelling it may be due to the procedure and not the medicine. If you are having itching through your body then Benadryl (diphenhydramine) would be helpful but you may also need a steroid pill. ...Read more

Is it safe to take children's benedryl and Claritin (loratadine) together for an allergic reaction?
Yes.: Sometimes you need a little more medication. I usually have my patients stick with the same antihistamine rather than take two different ones. I also prefer fexofenadine (allegra) & loratidine (claritin) to the others because they don't cause sedation or slow reaction time & because they last for 12-24 hours. Also i always recommend the generics over brand name. ...Read more

How many benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the recommended dose for an adult with an allergic reaction to an antibiotic?
Label explains: I'd first advise calling your doctor who depending upon the SEVERITY of your reaction may prefer you be seen in the ER. Otherwise, if symptoms are not severe and they've been present for a few hours or so I would simply follow label instructions on the bottle or box of tablets. Careful not to drive after taking them.
