Blood test result - on a recent blood test result the component result for ALT (sgpt) was 66, which was listed as abnormal. What might this be?
Maybe "hepatitis": Hepatitis is defined as inflammation of liver cells, as is indicated by elevation in serum transaminases (ast and/or alt). Hepatitis can be caused by a variety of issues (infectious, ischemic, metabolic, toxic, infiltrative, alcohol-related, drugs, etc.). Alt is not however specific to just the liver--so, what tests have been done ; what has been ruled out? ...Read more
A common cause of elevated liver enzymes is use/abuse of alcohol. If you drink, stop entirely and get retested in three months. Other common causes are viral hepatitis, medication effects and heart failure. See this site for more info.

Abnormal labs: It's hard to evaluate an isolated abnormal blood test without having the results of all of the other tests, even if normal, and the clinical setting, i.e., your other medical problems, medications, etc. I would either return to your doctor for an explanation, or upload all of your labs to us here and use HealthTap Prime or feel free to consult me on Healthtap Concierge. Good luck. ...Read more

I just got my blood test result and it showed my ALT liver is 69. Something wrong with my liver? Why it is so high? I am very worry
Need evaluation: Do you drink alcohol? Are you on any medications? Alt of 69 is higher than normal but not that high. If you drink, stop for three months and redo the test. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is usually in the best position to do that. ...Read more
My blood test on 14 feb 2014 shows ALT 76 and AST 67 but bilibruin level is writhing normal rage do I have to be so worried about this ar this stage?
Depends on cause: How much do you weigh? Losing weight will help if your bmi is above 25. Stop drinking alcohol entirely. Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco. ...Read more

Had a blood test one year ago. The AST = 31 and ALT = 25. New test results - AST = 26 and ALT = 12. Ratio is now higher than 2. Any cause for concern?

Recent blood test shows gpt/alt of 219 and got/ast of 85. Is there something wrong with my liver?
Possibly: Problems like these can only be correctly handled by your doctor in person. He/she needs to listen to you, perform an examination and possibly run labs or other tests. That's the only way he/she can find out what's going on and what to do about it. ...Read more
I did a blood test and the result showed sgot (alt) is 60, sgpt (alt) is 60 and gamma gpt is 141. Please advise if the liver problem is serious.?
Can not tell: These tests are really misnamed. They have nothing to do with liver function but liver injury. Something is injuring the liver at a very slow rate. Even mild elevations as yours are, if it persists over years then it can be serious. It really depends on the cause. Some causes are more of a problem than others. It is important for your doctor to consider the cause if the levels stay elevated. ...Read more
Blood test scares me, my GPT (ALT) is 48, the range is 10-40, does it mean I have liver disease? I don't drink, I don't smoke, I have no symptoms.
Abnormal AL T: ... Can be a sign of liver disease, but when the other liver tests are normal, it most likely will turn out not to be a big problem. It is important for you to have a repeat set of liver tests in a few months, to be sure that it has gone back to normal, however. If it is still abnormal, good further testing may be necessary. Be sure to follow up. Good luck. ...Read more
My friend's blood test came back with ALT at 283 and AST at 123. With enzymes so high, what could it mean?
Get worked up: His physician will probably repeat these with him off alcohol and all meds after two weeks. If they're normal, that's his warning. If not, a workup for hepatitis b, hepatitis c, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, wilson's and antitrypsin deficiency as appropriate. If none is found, he may perhaps have recommended an even more fitness-focused lifestyle. Best to you both. ...Read more
Hi I have just had a blood test done and high levels of AST and ALT. What does this mean? What should I do?
It depends..: It depends on exactly how high they are and what your doctor felt on examination of your liver (did he/she feel it was enlarged/painful?). Sometimes this can mean you have viral or autoimmune hepatitis, toxicity from drugs or other toxins, alcoholic liver disease, and a list of other possibilities. You need to have a serious discussion about this with your treating physician to discuss next steps. ...Read more
I take multaq for afib. I got a recent blood test and my ALT level is a little high could that be the cause?
Hi, my SGPT/ALT last Jan 28 was 66. But in Feb 2-9, I took Clindamycin for my tonsilitis. I had a blood test after 2 weeks, and it was 91. is it ok?
May be temporary...: If Liver enzyme elevated to begin with Clinda may make it worse (contradicted in severe hepatitis). Make sure to recheck after treatment and keep well hydrated. Avoid any alcohol, Tylenol. Add to your regimen after Antibiotics high dose " Probiotics"- Kefir, Yogurt, and supplement VSL#3/Vsibiome 450 mil. It controls Gut bacteria and restore immune system. Have your MD recheck labs. ...Read more

Blood test lipid results showed 2 things flagged as abnormal. AST 64 and ALT 98. What does this mean?
Elevated liver test:
These tests are above normal, but not more than twice the "upper limit of normal", and so would be considered a mild degree of elevation.
Numerous conditions can cause this; it depends on why your physician ordered the test. Can be from medications, or from a temporary or chronic illness.
Would check with your ordering physician. If was thought temporary, could repeat them after several weeks. ...Read more
My blood test came back high in certain areas: GGT 217, ALT 157, AST 101 and ap 197. Should I be worried?
Yes indeed: Your physician may take you off all meds and alcohol and repeat, or simply go on to test you for hepatitis b and c, hemochromatosis, wilson's, autoimmune hepatitis and perhaps a few others. If no cause is found, aerobic exercise may be the way to better all-around health and lower liver enzymes. ...Read more
I just had a blood test alt was 45. Right before the blood test I had been given anastasia for a mole they were removing. Could that raise alt.
It's OK: The average is 25 and +_ 1 sd is from 8 to 55. You don't interpret medical laboratory results in isolation but in a context. Your single result is within the normal range but if you want to further discussion gather all of your medical data and either make an appt with a flesh and blood doc or a virtual appt. ...Read more
Blood test sgot/alt 40 abnormal high, lymph 1.1, abnormal low, w/all mediastinal & bilateral hilar nodes enlarged + virchows node. What could it be?
Until proved not...: ... Our principal concern is cancer. I would draw no conclusions from the lymphocyte count, the SGOT / alt being somewhat high is merely suggestive, but the big nodes are going to require biopsy. Maybe it's a medication reaction, sarcoidosis, or any of a host of other possibilities. But we want to get at the truth. Good luck. ...Read more
