IBS/anxiety d/o: You need to discuss this with the GI doctor seeing you. Both of these medications have potential for addiction and should not be taken without a clear indication. If they treat your anxiety effectively they are not likely to be responsible for abdominal pain. ...Read more

Hard to say: without knowing your full health history, and what else has been tried, impossible to give good advice. The best treatment for IBS, especially when associated with anxiety, is to treat the anxiety effectively. Benzos, including Xanax, (alprazolam) are NOT the first line treatment for chronic anxiety. Psychotherapies of various kinds and SSRI/SNRI medications are generally better. Increase fiber in your diet. ...Read more

I would avoid: the Peppermint oil. It may decrease how quickly the liver breaks down medications causing an increase in the effects and side effects of such medications. Two of the medicines you take--Xanax and escitalopram--are metabolized by the liver/cytochromne P450 and could be affected by Peppermint oil. Aloe Vera juice may be a little safer but it also affects the cytochrome P450 pathways. I would avoid. ...Read more

Not a fan of it: Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system . So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight , dentist or other infrequent anxieties, not on daily basis. ...Read more
