Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system. So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. Cannot compare: 0.25 is a very lose dose of alprazolam as is 50 mg of topiramate so overall neither is very powerful. However, considering their different mechanisms of action of therapeutic effects, it would be difficult to compare the efficacies of the doses of these two different drugs. ...Read more
Not the same: Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine that is mainly used for anxiety disorders. Topiramate is an anti-epileptic used for sone seizure disorders and often used for migraine disease. Alprazolam enhances the inhibitory effects of GABA. While topiramate has some GABA potentiation effect, its main action is blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels. ...Read more

I got an ativan shot around 10pm lastnight. Is it safe to take the Xanax (alprazolam) 0.25 mg that they prescribed me right now? Plz answer asap! Thank you!
Possibly: Depending on what your prescribing doctor told you about use of the xanax, (alprazolam) taking it 12 hours after your Ativan shot could be safe. Asking the doctor who actually knows you and your case would provide you a more reliable answer than asking online physicians who have never met you, though. Best wishes. ...Read more

I have difficulty sleeping at night. Thrice a week I take alprazolam 0.25 mg to sleep. Is it safe? Will it cause any problems if I have to get pregnant?
Too short a 1/2 life: Most sedatives (including alcohol) whose blood level drops fairly rapidly may help you to fall asleep but may interfere with staying asleep. Benzodiazepines (such as alprazolam), are pregnancy category d, meaning there is evidence of fetal risk. It would be useful to know the cause of your sleep difficulty -? Anxiety, ? Depression, ? Poor sleep hygiene, ? Pain, ? Sleep apnea - to guide treament. ...Read more
I had an EKG and the cardiologist said I had a slow heart rate. Is this a concern? I have been taking Xanax (alprazolam) 0.25 mg for years. Can Xanax (alprazolam) do this?
Recently I just know that I am anemic, is it ok to take amitriptyline 5mg, Xanax (alprazolam) 0.25 mg and sangobion. I have a bit depression and panic attack.
Pls help. What is the optimal time btw xanax (alprazolam) dosages. Taking 0.25 mg 2 times a day, with interval of 6 hours but after the 4th hour I start to freak out?
Xanax (alprazolam): Assume by 'freak out' you mean panic/anxiety attack. Xanax (alprazolam) is short-acting, generally lasts 4-6 hours varies with individual, other meds you may take etc. Discuss dose, other med options and recurring anxiety symptoms with prescribing doctor. You may do better with: an SSRI type antidepressant, even low-dose, for better coverage, or extended-release Xanax (alprazolam). I hope this helps. Best wishes. ...Read more
What is alprazolam? It's only 0.25 mg my moms dr gave them to her. I just wanted to know what they are.
Sedative-Hypnotic: It's also called xanax (alprazolam). It's a sedative-hypnotic med, a member of the benzodiazepine class of drugs (as is valium, for instance). It is most often used for anxiety/panic attacks, sleep, muscle relaxation, etc. 0.25mg is a very low dose. Talk to your mom if you're concerned. Your concern for her welfare may be just as therapeutic as the pills! Be tactful, given you don't know why she's using it :). ...Read more

Does it means that Xanax (alprazolam) can cause to deaths? I take for 8 years every day 0.25 and sometime half of 0.25. Feel afraid
How long/how many days does it take for 0.25 mg doses of Xanax (alprazolam) to start taking affect and make one feel relaxed, calm, and less anxious?
Xanax (alprazolam) not working: The benzodiazepine (e.g. Xanax) naive patient should feel the effect within the hour. Individuals are unique and depending on one's pharmacogenetics/liver metabolism of medications, the medication may work for some but as well for others. The prescribing physician should be informed. More importantly, non-medicinal modalities & non-habit forming medications should be attempted first. ...Read more
I take a half a Xanax (alprazolam) three or 4 times a day and it's half of 0.25. I've been taking them every day for about a month. Will I need to be weened off?
Possibly: It is rarely a good idea to stop taking most psych meds suddenly. You are taking 0.375 to 0.5 mg of xanax (alprazolam) for only a month. I don't have enough info to know which anxiety disorder you have. I would discuss this with your prescribing doctor. I believe in slow tapering of benzodiazepines in general, but the particulars of your case could make tapering unnecessary. Psychopharmacology is very much the art of knowing our patients and their illnesses and placing them on medication and taking them off medication appropriately and elegantly. I've been taking 1/2 of 0.25 Xanax (alprazolam) twice daily Will I have withdrawls if I go two days w/out taking them? I have to wait for my refill until then.
Not likely: This is a pretty small dose, but if you are running out before you are supposed to, you are either taking more than was prescribed, or a drug that was supposed to be used very occasionally is now being used more often. You need to talk to the prescriber about how you are taking them. Benzodiazepines are not the best drugs for longer-term anxiety, and your doctor can discuss alternatives. ...Read more

MD should guide you: If you have been taking alprazolam routinely you should taper off of the medication slowly and with the guidance of your doctor to avoid withdrawal issues. That should both minimize your body's adjustment to the discontinuation of alprazolam and allow any anxiety issues previously treated by the alprazolam to be identified and treated in another manner. ...Read more
Female, 245 lbs, took 0.25 mg Xanax (alprazolam) 8 days ago. Have to take pre-employment drug test. Am I ok? Will it show up?
Probably not: If in fact you only took it once - it is short-acting and its metabolites are essentially gone in 3-5 days. Your weight doesn't really factor into it. However, if you are taking it by prescription, it should not matter unless you are applying for a safety-sensitive position (driver, police, fire etc.). If you are NOT prescribed it, you should NOT be taking it. ...Read more
