Is AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) test used to detect any kind of cancer in the body? I.e higher value will indicate that there is cancer somewhere in body.

Liver and germ cell: AFP can be elevated in cancers of the liver and some germ cell tumors. However, it also be elevated in patients with non-cancerous liver disease. The AFP results need to be interpreted in the clinical context. It is not a general marker for cancer.

When did alpha fetoprotein testing start?

When did alpha fetoprotein testing start?

1980's: The Alpha fetoprotein test was around when I was a resident physician. The test has progressed through the y ears such that there are four levels measured in the pregnant woman's blood looking for the risk of down's syndrome (trisomy 21), trisomy 18 & neural tube defects like spina bifida. This is called the quadruple screen best measured between 16 & weeks of pregnancy. ...Read more

What does a low alpha fetoprotein level mean?

What does a low alpha fetoprotein level mean?

Alphafetoprotein: Very low levels of AFP measured between 16-18 weeks of pregnancy can be associated with chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, most commonly down's syndrome. Further, testing by amniocentesis will rule this out. It may also b a red flag for intrauterine growth restriction and preterm birth. Will need closer observation and testing. ...Read more

What can cause an elevated alpha fetoprotein level?

Different diseases: In pregnancy, elevated alpha fetoprotein levels in a woman's serum can indicate fetal abnormalities, like neural tube defects (spina bifida) or ventral wall defects like omphalocele. Outside pregnancy the levels can be elevated in liver cancer or cancer of the germ cells (ovary, testes). ...Read more

What are alpha-fetoprotein tests in pregnancy for?

Screening: There are now four tests (quadruple screening) looking for the risks of down's syndrome, trisomy 18 (lethal for babies) as well as neural tube defects such as spina bifida, meningomyelocele and hydrocephalus. ...Read more

Can dehydration cause slightly elevated alpha fetoprotein?

Can dehydration cause slightly elevated alpha fetoprotein?

Dehydration and labs: Dehydration can raise some blood values. Most notably, sodium, chloride, BUN and creatinine are elevated due to less water in the blood. Likewise, Alpha fetoprotein can also be elevated and you would have to see how the elevation is and how the severe the patient's dehydration was at the time the blood sample was taken. Ask the physician who ordered the test for her input. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my female friend has an alpha-fetoprotein (afp) number of 20.91 ng/ml. . .?

Pregnant or not?: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is used during pregnancy as part of the "Quad Screen". This is a test that includes AFP and three other blood chemicals to screen for Trisomy 18, Trisomy 21 and Neural Tube defects. If the quad screen is abnormal, a referral to see a perinatologist for a detailed ultrasound and additional testing is in order. AFP can also be tested as part of a cancer work-up. ...Read more

What does an elevated alpha fetoprotein in pregnancy mean?

Increased tesing: An elevation of the Alpha fetoprotein test should alert your doctor that there may be an increased risk of genetic abnormalities such as down's syndrome in the baby. Pregnant women are offered a more detailed ultrasound test looking for signs of genetic problems & are usually offered an amniocentesis which lets you know the chromosomes of the baby. Down's is also known as trisomy 21. ...Read more

Please exlain alpha-fetoprotein testing for genetic disorders?

Alpha fetal protein: AFP is a fetal specific globulin, synthesized by the fetal yolk sac, gastrointestinal tract, and liver. The function of AFP is unknown. AFP blood levels can be measured during the second trimester to screen for open spina bifida and anencephaly, but can also uncover fetal abnormalities such as abdominal wall defects. AFP is also used in screening tests for downs syndrome and edwards syndrome. ...Read more

What can cause low AFP (alpha fetoprotein) levels in a pregnant woman?

Low AFP: Low AFP is associated with Down's syndrome, but some women do have a low AFP that is unexplained. At 39, you should have already been offered a level 2 ultrasound and genetic testing. If you don't feel comfortable having an amniocentesis, a cell free dNA test can be done through your blood. ...Read more

What's the test for alpha-fetoprotein estriol human chronic gonadotropin inhibin a?

Quad Screen: This non-invasive prenatal screening blood (serum) test is done around 12 weeks gestation to see if the fetus may have down's syndrome (trisomy 21) or trisomy 18. It is often combined with a transvaginal ultrasound for better accuracy. This test is not diagnostic. If the screening test is worrisome, then an amniocentesis is usually recommended. ...Read more

Mom and liver spot: Unfortunately, nothing on a ct, regardless of lab studies like AFP gives a definitive diagnosis. An elevated AFP blood test is seen in about 60% of liver cancer patients. So 40% of patients with liver cancer may have normal AFP levels (less than 10) which do not exclude cancer. The major issue is the mass which must be biopsied to get a diagnosis, after which a plan can be made. ...Read more

28 yr-old with 8 yrs of autonomic, endocrinologic, and inflammatory symptoms, which have both a daily pattern and a seasonal pattern.....?

Psychologial Tx of physical problems: Andrew, your symptoms indicate the strong possibility of being the consequence of conditioning from earlier life experiences. I say this because of their cyclic nature, the act hat the symptoms are physical does not preclude the cause being psychological.

I urge you to visit www.stii.us for expanded information on this possibility. Treatment by Subliminal Therapy is my first recommendation with Hypnotic methods being second (www.asch.net for a referral for hypnosis). Medications can mask symptoms but do not address the problem itself. When you resolve the cause of a problem, you eliminate its symptoms.

Best wishes, Dr. Yager ...Read more
