Embrace it: Hi Rishi -- If this is alopecia areata, no Rx works. The old "oral mini-pulse" glucocorticoid treatments that were tried a while back were a disappointment, as you know. Nobody notices that the Mona Lisa lacks eyebrows, and they won't care about yours. I have two friends with this -- athletic men, and they both love it -- clean, tidy, macho. Genetic Cause?: There are many causes that would explain why someone does not grow hair or the hair is very sparse. If a child has not grown hair by the age of 2.5yrs, there is a good chance there is a genetic cause. The cause could be one of several types of "Ectodermal Dysplasia" or "Congenital Atrichia". It can be a sign of: Alopecia Areata, which can also occur in the scalp. Unilateral eyebrow thinning can also be from Trichitillomania, pulling out eyebrow hair, or Tinea Capitis, a fungal infection. Less likely causes in kids are Telogen Effluvium, a response to physical or emotional stress, or hypothyroidism. His pediatrician can examine him & either provide treatment or refer him to a dermatologist, if needed. ...Read more

Get evaluated: I'm betting you've got alopecia areata. I've got a doctor friend who has it and loves being totally smooth.
