I started allopurinol 2 weeks ago and now have a gout attack should I stop and take colchicine or take both together?

You can: Try both together but if not helping in 24-48 hours stop Allopurinol. take Colchicine alone for 5-7 days then restart Allopurinol. .....hope this is helpful!

I'm taking allopurinol together with colchicine. If no more flare, can I drop colchicine but continously take allopurinol? Will gout attack reoccur?

I'm taking allopurinol together with colchicine. If no more flare, can I drop colchicine but continously take allopurinol? Will gout attack reoccur?

Yes; possibly: You can stop Colchicine and use Allopurinol alone to prevent recurrent attacks. Keeping your Uric Acid level below 6 with Allopurinol and a low purine diet can reduce your likelihood of attacks in the future.

For gout attack could I take : diclofenac 50mg, colchicine & allopurinol 100mg, all together?

For gout attack could I take : diclofenac 50mg, colchicine & allopurinol 100mg, all together?

Allopurinol Chronic: For acute gout Colchicine and diclofenac are reasonable. Do not exceed the recommended dose of Colchicine and stop immediately if diarrhea occurs. Allopurinol is to prevent chronic gout. Many patients starting Allopurinol will have an acute gout attack because attacks occur when uric acid levels go up or down. To prevent this some patients take Colchicine daily for up to 6 months.

I have been taking allopurinol for 1 week. I now have a gout attack. Can I take colchicine as well? I

Wrong order!: Taking Allopurinol during an attack will worsen and prolong it. My regimen is this: establish diagnosis. You can start an nsaid, inject the affected joint (s) with steroids, start colchicine, bid is adequate with the other meds. After three days start Allopurinol 100mg x 1wk, 200mg x 1wk, and then the full dose. The cochicine can be cut back to once daily.

I've had a gout attack yesterday after 5 years & took Allopurinol 2 X 100mg yesterday & 1 X 100 mg today. No relief. Can I take Colchicine also?

Wrong move: Allopurinol will prolong the attack. Stop it immediately. It is only used on a daily basis to prevent future attacks. Colchicine is not very effective unless it is started very early in the attack. Use an NSAID such as naproxen or indomethacin.

I have been put on a long term treatment for elevated uric acid with 1 tablet Colchicine and 100mg Allopurinol daily. Is the Colchicine necessary?

Usually not: Colchicine is usually reserved for an acute gout attack, not for preventative measures. Allopurinol should be stopped during an acute gout attack, and restarted once the pain has ressolved. Go see your doctor if you have questions about the meds he/she prescribed you.

Can I take colchicine alone as a preventative for gout? Will it lower uric acid levels or must I take with either Allopurinol or Uloric?

Colchicine: Colchicine alone is effective in diminishing gout. Yes. Allopurinol is not mandatory but of course helps. Also, avoid alcohol, animal fats, organ meats and shellfish. Limit other meats to 4 oz per day. Avoid high fructose corn syrup containing drinks. Add egg whites, quinoa, soy as protein. Eat lots of fruit and veggies. Drink 3 liters per day.

I'm taking allopurinol and colchicine everyday. No sign for gout attack until today. Can I take red meat (beef) as much and as often as I like?

Meat and gout: No you should not. Limit red meat to 4-6 oz 3 times per week. Incline diet toward more and more fruit and veggie -- less meat.

Which is more affective pain management of a gouty foot flare-up, Naproxen or Celebrex (celecoxib)? (along with Colchicine) Allipurinol already prescribed.

Which is more affective pain management of a gouty foot flare-up, Naproxen or Celebrex (celecoxib)? (along with Colchicine) Allipurinol already prescribed.

Probably naproxen: Naproxen has been used for many years to treat acute episodes of gout-colcichine has been used longer but has more side effects if pushed.Celebrex (celecoxib) is an N SAID too but used more for having less gastrointestinal side effects. So the person who knows best with your history is the prescribing. Doctor.

Slightly high...: Your alanine transaminase (alt) was slightly high at 80. It should be less than 60. It is a sensitive but not a specific test of liver function. Talk to your doctor about what you ought to do and what might be causing the elevation. Also talk to him about a low purine diet which may help you avoid having to take medications with potentially adverse liver effects. Colchicine also ought to be prn...
