Postive, high, rast test results - only hayfever and animal reactions though? Are rast tests reliable?

Postive, high, rast test results - only hayfever and animal reactions though? Are rast tests reliable?

RAST vs skin tests: The reason allergists prefer skin tests to rast tests is because the skin tests show your body's biological response to allergens. Rast tests only measure the amount of antibody and do not predict its clinical binding and symptom-provoking abilities. That said, no test is perfect. All have to be compared to your experience and correlated with your history. Allergists spend more time doing this. ...Read more

Is an IGE allergy blood test as accurate as a skin test? My skin test from 1 year prior to IGE blood test showed additional allergens.

Is an IGE allergy blood test as accurate as a skin test? My skin test from 1 year prior to IGE blood test showed additional allergens.

Likely complementary: Although prick skin test is considered better in detecting food allergies the results of blood tests are complementary. I often order the blood test first in a case of a food suspected of causing anaphylaxis. If the result is negative or equivocal, then I would proceed with a skin test prior to a food challenge. The results are at times discrepant. ...Read more

A lab reported my ANA test result -ve, cut off rate: 1.117, sample rate: 0.198. They used immulite 2000 rai analyzer. Is it standard, reliable report?

A lab reported my ANA test result -ve, cut off rate: 1.117, sample rate: 0.198. They used immulite 2000 rai analyzer. Is it standard, reliable report?

It's just a lab: As a pathologist, i'm well-acquainted with the pitfalls of all ANA testing. The real decision is whether to treat your joint pain as lupus or one of its ana-positive variants. Many healthy folks have some ANA on board. The value that's returned from the lab is only one piece of the puzzle in working up rheumatologic disease. ...Read more

Mast cell concern, normal blood wk, but flushing, short term rashes, sensitive skin, GI issues, allergies, allergy test change from all pos. To all neg.?

See a specialist: Normal blood work taken when you are feeling relatively "normal" may not exclude all cases of mast cell disease. It may help to recheck certain labs (e.g., tryptase) within a couple hours of the start of an episode. There are also other potential causes for your symptoms, such as certain tumors, dermatographism, etc. I would see an expert in mast cell disorders and/or flushing disorders for help. ...Read more

Took HIV Antibody 1&2 Test and P24 Antigen test 10 days after PEP. Results non-reactive. A bit early. All other blood panel metrics normal. Thoughts?

Took HIV Antibody 1&2 Test and P24 Antigen test 10 days after PEP. Results non-reactive. A bit early. All other blood panel metrics normal. Thoughts?

Not conclusive: These results are reassuring; it is unlikely you were infected. However, the results are not conclusive. Following PEP, it is necessary to test for HIV longer than otherwise, maybe up to 4 months. (PEP is great when needed, but it prolongs the time of uncertainty about whether infection occurred.) Discuss with the clinic or doctor who prescribed the PEP and follow his or her advice. ...Read more

Does Hiv 1-2 Antibody and antigen test after 11 years of exposure gives current Hiv status accurate? If results are negative for 2 times sametype test

Worried?: If I understand you correctly and it's been 11 years since exposure then you have nothing to worry about. after 2 negative tests done at the appropriate times. On the other hand if you have been having ongoing exposures for 11 years that's a different story. ...Read more
