GE Reflux/asthma/CHF: If your cough occurs while lying down, it could be either cardiac or gastrointestinal in origin, instead of just pulmonary. If it is associated with shortness of breath and chest or back pain, you need to see your doctor right away. Could be: Allergies can indeed cause a post nasal drip (PND) that irritates the throat and causes an annoying cough. I have had good success with rx nasal sprays that help with allergies and the pnd, getting rid of the cough too. Best wishes. ...Read more

Dr says cough is either allergies or asthma. Been on Flovent inhaler for 6 wks and cough still present. No other symptoms. Does this rule out asthma?

Cough: yih might want to check if there is allergy triggers, like cats or dogs or something in the room that triggers allergies. Next step is to increase Flovent dose or add long term beta agonist like advisor, or dulera or symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) ...Read more

Response to therapy: Assuming that you have narrowed the cause of your cough down to these things, it all depends on your response to medical therapy and avoidance of triggers. Your doctor could help with a trial of an inhaler like albuterol and you could also try medicines that are available over the counter for GERD and allergies. If you respond to symptomatic care, that may be al that you need. Also consider URIs. ...Read more
