Is there evidence that erythromycin prevents newborn conjunctivitis not caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia? Studies? How many cases are not std-related?

Can you take atorvastatin (lipitor) and erythromycin for sinus issues and need to take atorvastatin? Allergic to penacilin
When I was an infant, I had an allergic reaction to erythromycin. I still tell docs that I'm allergic to that med. Is this still necessary?
Depends: Many of the kids reacting to Erythromycin years ago simply had a gut that didn't like it. If thr reaction was simple vomiting & belly pain it was more likely intolerance & not a true allergy. Either way, you should always share medication reactions with your doc. If s/he decides you need something from that medication family it will make it easier to chose wisely. ...Read more
No cross reaction: Ampicillin and other penicillin-type antibiotics have a completely different chemical structure than erythromycin. Thus, the risk for allergic reaction to Ampicillin is no different than your average person. Your doctor can tell you which antibiotic (ampicillin, cipro, (ciprofloxacin) etc.) will be most effective for a given infection (sinus infection vs skin infection, etc.). See your doctor for more info. ...Read more
After sex I have intense burning. The condoms are lubricated. He is worried I may be allergic to latex, I am worried I have more cysts. No STD's?
Allergy? Yeast?: No "cysts" would cause burning of this sort. If it occurs immediately after sex, your partner may be on the right track, i.e. chemical irritation or allergy. Latex could do it, or lubricant with the condom, especially if it contains spermicide like nonoxynol-9. Maybe yeast infection. Try polyurethane condoms, no spermicide. If it persists or to check "cysts", see your doctor. Get STD tested. ...Read more

What are the alternatives if one is allergic to amoxillin, ampicillin, erythromycin and clindamycin?
See below: It depends on the type of penicillin allergy. If just a rash you can take cephalosporins like keflex. If hives, throat swelling or anaphylaxis you cannot take them. Low likelihood: While both of these antibiotics are macrolides, erythromycin has a 14 carbon lactone ring and azithromycin has a 15 carbon lactone ring. The likelihood is low for cross reactivity, however, a board certified allergist can provide strategies to assess this. Skin tests may be helpful, yet are not standardized so a graded challenge may be necessary. ...Read more

I had doxycycline before for STD now I need it again, scared of being allergic. I was fine last time so should be fine again?
No Worries: Since you tolerated this medication last time you are at no greater risk than the general population for developing an allergy to doxycycline. Of course you need to be exposed to a medication first before you can develop an allergy, but that should not prevent you from taking medications for a second time.
