Prednisone (Definition)

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Is there a system wide steroind antiinflam other the cortisone or prednisone.....Cromlyn maybe?

See below: Cromolyn is the mast cells stabiliser. It mostly prophylactic meds, than for acute exacerbations. Check with your allergologist. Your elevated BP probably keeps you to search for alternative medication. Check also for food tolerance/allergy; contact dermatitis ( laundry detergents, deodorants, etc). Your pcp should guide you on that. ...Read more

I've been on prednisone for 3 days for cystic acne, i ended it yesterday and suffer from flare up, can I get cortisone shot in flared up cyst?

I've been on prednisone for 3 days for cystic acne, i ended it yesterday and suffer from flare up, can I get cortisone shot in flared up cyst?

Probably: Cystic acne is difficult to treat and i often find Prednisone for 3 days not effective. Prednisone, in general, doesn't work well long term or short term. We usually start with antibiotics, retinoids and a combo product of benz peroxide and clindamycin. A new product called aczone may also help. Injection may help with one spot not many. ...Read more

Slept in hotel, woke up later with bites all over me, started to swell and turn red. Got cortisone shot, elimite (permethrin) and prednisone from doctor. How long?

How long?: Pretty aggressive treatment so I will assume it was moderate allergic reaction. Inflammation should improve over a period of a 3-5 days with all those steroids. Enclosing a good article. Be sure to check your luggage and clothes worn in that hotel in case you brought home a few "friends". Ask when next appt?: This could be tb, but might be one of several other infectious, musculo-skeletal, or related conditions. It needs examined by a doctor, soon. Questions the provider asks should help direct yours beyond just "what is it?" initial cxr or ct scan will likely yield more information to base questions (and treatment, if needed) on. ...Read more

What can I take instead if I am allergic to prednisone?

Ask your doctor: Depends on what you mean by "allergic" to it - there can be adverse reactions that are not really allergy. If you are truly allergic, it could be to another component of the pill, and another brand could be tried. Or, another steroid - methyprednisolone or Medrol (methylprednisolone) could be used. If your doctor doesn't have an answer, ask to see an allergist about this. ...Read more
