Allergic Reaction To Probiotics
What are the chances of having an allergic reaction to a probiotic? Want to take them but scared that will cause harm.
Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. There are several species of these bacteria that are helpful to us including lactobacillus acidophilus. The meats we eat contain antibiotics that kill our natural bacteria that reside in our gut. Today, you will replace these ...Read more
Is an allergic reaction possible with probiotics such as florajen3? I've had l. Acidophilus in yogurt, but I'm worried about b. Lactis/longum.
Yes! EvenWithNothing: Reactions, allergic & otherwise, are always under the internal control of the individual exhibiting the reaction & theories as to what may have triggered the behavior (reaction) are always just that, theories, guesses, rarely with significant scientifically verified evidence of accuracy, no matter the degree of the person guessing. Why? Control and complexity are within the individual reacting. ...Read more
Unknown: Probiotics have been found to decrease the frequency and severity of viral uri's (common cold) in prospective, randomized clinical trials, and probiotics have also been found to cause beneficial changes in the immune system. However, probiotics have not been found to reduce hay fever / allergies. On the other hand, that question may not have been studied yet. ...Read more
Is culterelle probiotic safe for everyone to take even if on perscription drugs for heart condition & history of allergies?
Have heard research clostridia bacteria can help cure food allergies- is there a probiotic that contains this stran out yet? Can I get it anywhere?
Unaware: I have not heard of a sound study related to using clostridia to cure food allergy. Even if there is one, I would certainly wait for confirmation by other studies before trying it. Clostridia is not considered a probiotic thus there is no such OTC preparation that I am aware of. Avoidance remains the best although researches are ongoing in trying make people tolerant to foods they are allergic ...Read more
Doc, safe to take a pill of probiotic everyday? Can it cause hives, allergies and any other side effects? I had high IGe. Any relation to probiotics?
Usually: Most people can tolerate probiotics but extremely high doses can cause gastrointestinal upset. I am not aware of any link to hives or allergic diseases. In fact, there are studies showing that probiotics may lower the chance of developing eczema for infants. Do note that not all probiotics are created equal and different strains may be needed for different folks- thus no universal good guy. ...Read more
Is it possible to have candida die off reaction from starting new probiotics? Have had drunk feeling several weeks. Started when I began probiotic.
Yes: Yes, certain probiotics may help to kill candida resulting in a Jarisch-Herxheimer or die-off reaction. This is caused by toxins from the dead yeast which can trigger inflammatory cytokines. Drinking more water, taking chlorella and/or charcoal, a good multivitamin, liposomal glutathione, milk thistle and natural anti-inflammatory agents like curcumin should help. Die-off symptoms lessen over time. ...Read more
Wife seems to have had bad reaction to clindamycin a year ago. C-diff negative, but now IBS symptoms. What's the best probiotic to help resolve?
Your choice: People with irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) may benefit from the addition of a probiotic. Ibs is a general term which covers a variety of non specific GI complaints which have no absolute pathological cause. I suggest a well balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, and other fibre. I also suggest addition of yogurt to the diet. A probiotic is equal to about 10 yogurts a day. Any brand is ok. ...Read more
I'm ttc, and when me and hubby try I have an irritating reaction, (as if infection). I'm taking probiotics, folic acid 400mcg. What more should I do?
Investigation: It sounds like you are doing everything right. It's possible you have an infection (yeast or bacteria) and only notice it after the friction of sex. If so, a doctor can test and possibly prescribe. Lubrication can have a lot to do with that feeling to. Maybe something in your diet, exercise, sleep, stress, soaps, etc., that's causing vaginal dryness? See a gyn for full evaluation and help. ...Read more
My bf tested positive for Chlamydia I have symptoms so I started to eat yoghurt and it started to get better does the probiotic in yoghurt mes result?
Need antibiotic ASAP: You need testing for chlamydia and proper antibiotic reatment (doxycycline or azithromycin) even if your test is negative. Improved symptoms with yogurt and probiotics are meaningless and won’t prevent tubal infection or infertility, which can happen even without pain or other symptoms. Don’t mess around with this: see a doctor or clinic and do it right! Good luck. ...Read more

Is eating multivitamin for allergic and sneezing good idea or earing probiotics for allergic and sneezing?? Please suggest thx..
Neutral: Multivitamins are not usually needed for people in the developed countries except in cases of severe dietary restrictions. There is little proof that they would do much for allergies. If you were to take anything, vitamin D3 may be the one. There is also no proof that probiotics do anything for hay fever or asthma although they may be helpful in some cases of eczema. Try nasal steroid. ...Read more
Not entirely clear.: Your question is a good one. Most manufacturers of probiotics simply direct you to take one tablet daily. Others state it should be taken at the start of a meal. In my practice, I have patients take it with food as I see less gastrointestinal symptoms. ...Read more
Is an immediate acne breakout (within a week) a result of stopping antibiotics or starting a high dosage probiotics?
Possibly: If you were having problems with acne breakouts, it is possible that continuous antibiotic administration was suppressing your acne tendency. When you discontinued steady antibiotic intake, skin bacteria may have proliferated causing an outbreak. A dermatologist is best qualified to answer your question, however. I don't think taking probiotics was the cause of the outbreak. ...Read more
My 4 month baby stool test result shown Pus cell 5-10/H.P.F and RBC 1-2/H.P.F.Do I need to worry and probiotic can be cure? Is that serious condition?
Is baby sick: It depends on why the stool test was done and how the baby is. In general, pus (WBC cells), also known as fecal leukocytes are an indication of infection. Is the baby having diarrhea or bloody stools? If so, a stool culture is usually indicated and what bugs are found determine if antibiotics are needed. Certain bugs don't need treatment. Generally NO, probiotics won't treat infection. ...Read more

Probiotics: Probiotics are not yet studied well enough to recommend routine usage. Except for particular circumstances, such as infection with C. Difficile, the studies that have been done have not shown any benefit in healthy individuals. I would not recommend them yet unless you have been advised by your physician that you should give them a try. Good luck. ...Read more
