I'm allergic to iodine. I am hashi hypothyroid. Can only take brand Synthroid (thyroxine) & cytomel. But when taken together I have a severe allergic reaction.

Check w/Pharmacist: If you mean taking the two pills at the same time causes a reaction, but taking either one by itself does not, then you could try taking them several hours apart (like one w/bkfst and other w/dinner). If that fails, will need to talk to endocrinologist to see if can manage on one agent. ...Read more

Maybe: Ct contrast agents is usually iodinated and are classifed as either ionic or non-ionic. Some are more allergy-prone than others. Ct scan contrast is totally different than MRI contrast. In contrast, MRI contrast agents usually contains chelated gadolinium. Tell the radiologist about your previous ct scan contract allergic symptoms when getting your mri. ...Read more

Reaction to contrast: Contrast media reactions are often described as allergy but in truth are not allergy. The high concentration of the contrast can shock cells called basophils into releasing their granules filled with histamine. This causes the same reaction as the histamine release due to allergy. Shellfish allergy has nothing to do with iodine or contrast. Low osmolality contrast & premedication helps. ...Read more

I have had previous reaction to to iodine iv, will they still give me the IV with a abdominal ct? It's on my record, dr ordered with and w/o.Am afraid

It depends.: If the exam requires IV contrast to make the diagnosis, you may need to take medicine before the study. Usually patients that require contrast who have had a prior reaction will take a combination prep of steroids and benedryl if you really need contrast. I'd call your doctor's office and/or the radiology department. It's much better to work this out ahead of time! ...Read more
