Allergic Penicillin Prescribed Cefazolin Terrified Needles Pills
Since i'm allergic to penicillin, I was prescribed cefazolin, but i'm terrified of needles. Can I take pills instead?
Pen/cephalosporins : It depends . First of all, the first choice substitute antibiotic for a penicillin-allergic person is not a cephalosporin, especially a first-generation one like cephazolin. There is a small chance you will be allergic to the cephazolin, and giving it parenterally is much more dangerous than orally. The type of infection you have determines what antibiotics you can use. Ask your doctor for options. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Maybe: Penicillin allergy is usually secondary to either the beta-lactam components or the minor determinants. If you are found to be allergic (via skin testing) to the beta-lactam component then you are at risk for sensitization to all beta-lactam medications, including cephalosporins. Fortunately in the majority of people, this is not the case. You should consult with your local allergy specialist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Sulfa drugs- rash can I use polymyxin b sulfate eye drops?
Yes: Polymyxin is an effective anti-bacterial. You could use it without the allergies popping up as it has with others. However: are you sure you need this drop? It seems as if you are using an antibiotic for every eye inflammation, most of which are probably not bacterial. And in so doing you have sensitized yourself to antibiotics that you might need for an actual infection. ...Read more

Depends.: It depends how severe your reaction is and who the prescribing practitioner is. There is about a 10% cross reactivity with cephalosporins (Rocephin (ceftriaxone)) and penicillin based drugs. Usually if the reaction is minor, I will prescribe a cephalosporin like Rocephin (ceftriaxone). However, if the reaction to the penicillin based med is severe like shortness of breath, swelling or anaphylaxis I may avoid them completely. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have strep throat, doctor gave me an injection of bicillin la (benzathine penicillin). And four prescriped penicilin antibiotics. Was wondering what were the side effects?
Possibly: You don't know if you have an infection, do you? Taking antibiotics when you don't have an infection is totally useless, and taking antibiotics if you do have a dental infection will not fix the tooth. You still need to see a dentist for care, so the sooner you call the sooner you will feel better.. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
