What happens if you can't have a penicillin shot for syphilis?

What happens if you can't have a penicillin shot for syphilis?

Doxycycline: Doxycycline for 2-4 weeks is recommended if penicillin cannot be given, or sometimes ceftriaxone. However, penicillin is by far the best drug. If you had a severe penicillin allergy in the past, then probably penicillin should be avoided. Otherwise, it still might be the best choice for you. Discuss it with your doctor or, even better, an infectious diseases or STD specialist. ...Read more

How come doctors dont prescribe ampicillin to treat syphilis if ampicilin is still penicillin?would it be effetive in treating very early exposure?

How come doctors dont prescribe ampicillin to treat syphilis if ampicilin is still penicillin?would it be effetive in treating very early exposure?

Get the shot: Oral penicillins like ampicillin have never been studied against syphilis, and many people wouldn't take it for the 2-4 weeks necessary, especially with usual side effects like diarrhea. Ampicillin soon after exposure probably would prevent syphilis, but there are no data on what dose would be needed. If exposed, you need penicillin by injection. Don't cut corners w/ such a dangerous infection. ...Read more

Stage 2 Syphilis 1:256 treated w/ penicillin. Rash came back 8 months later. Retest titer1:64. 4fold decrease successful treatment so why isrash back?

Rash: It may not be from the same cause. Obviously, I would suggest being evaluated for HIV (I assume that you have), since acquiring one STI may be associated with another infection. Are you on Remicade for Crohn's ? Any new medications? Usually the titers are rechecked after six months for a fourfold reduction which is in your case. Look for an alternative cause - recent antibiotic exposure?etc ...Read more
