I'm allergic to penicillin. What are the complications if I am given this antibiotic by accident?

Depends: When one is truly allergic to penicillin, if given this could cause a reaction anywhere from hives to serious anaphylaxis. A great number of people who have a history of a reaction to penicillin, especially just a rash, may not truly be allergic or at risk. A board certified allergist can do an evaluation including allergy skin tests and an oral challenge if indicated. ...Read more

I'm allergic to penicillin. Am I also allergic to penicillin derived antibiotics?

Fortunately in the majority of people, this is not the case. You should consult with your local allergy specialist. ...Read more

I'm allergic to penicillin. Am I also allergic to other antibiotics?

I'm allergic to penicillin. Am I also allergic to other antibiotics?

Some of them: Their are different "classes", or families of antibiotics. You would be likely to have a reaction to amoxicillin, for instance. Their is some cross reactivity with cephalosporins, like keflex, in approximately 15% of people. You could be allergic to other meds as well, but would not be much more likely than the general population to have an allergy to quinolones, like cipro, (ciprofloxacin) or macrolides. ...Read more

If a child is allergic to mold, could he also be allergic to penicillin-based antibiotics?

No: Good question. Being allergic to mold does not increase the risk of being allergic to penicillin based antibiotics. By extension. Penicillin allergic patients are not therefore allergic to blue cheese (which is a mold in the cheese). ...Read more

I have a skin infection and need an antibiotic but allergic to penicillin? What antibiotic is good?

I have a skin infection and need an antibiotic but allergic to penicillin? What antibiotic is good?

Depends: It would depend on the type of penicillin allergy you had and the type of skin infection. If you just had a rash from penicillin and you do not have an MRSA infection cephalosporins like Keflex would be fine. If immediate hypersensitivity to penicillin, clindamycin, Doxycycline or septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) would be options. ...Read more
