What’s the difference between all the vaccines containing diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine?
Ingredients: The acellular pertussis vaccines is now recommended to be given at least once to all adults . If there is a significant wound, a booster is recommended if it has been 5 or more years since the last one. Also, one of the boosters is recommended in the form of a tdap (with an "acellular pertussis" or whooping cough component). Is it necessary to give tetanus vaccine to prepubescent kids with injuries even though they have received three shots of tetanus toxoid as toddlers?
Incomplete series: Depending on the formulation used, the cdc recommended tetanus vaccine series includes 5 doses between 6 weeks and 6 years of age. For those not receiving tetanus as toddlers, 3 doses at appropriate intervals is accepted. Yes: Tetanus vaccines provide at least 10 years of immunity. But, if you have a 'dirty' wound involving rusty items or soil you should consider getting a booster shot if its been longer than 5 years. Those at significant risk of tetanus could pursue an evaluation with an allergist to identify which component of the vaccine that caused the rxn and go thru specific desensitization procedures.
