Will a hepatitis test show any kind of hepatitis, including alcoholic hepatitis?

No: "hepatitis tests" are tests for viral hepatitis, the most common of which are A (infectious hepatitis), B and C (but there are others). There is no specific test for alcoholic hepatitis, but there are certain patterns of liver enzymes that are more typically seen with alcohol-related damage. A liver biopsy can show changes consistent with alcohol, but these are also seen with diabetes and obesity ...Read more

What are the differences between viral hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis?

What are the differences between viral hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis?

Infection vs toxin: Viral hepatitis occurs after the virus gets into the liver where it injures the tissue while reproducing the virus. The areas involved cannot keep us with the regular liver work and symptoms continue until healing. Alcohol can be processed without liver injury up to a point. After that threshold is exceded it becomes toxic & the liver cells begin to die off & scar ...Read more

Diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis about a year ago - can drink at all? And why do I get drink off just 1 or 2 beers now? My husband was diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis about a year ago... He served in the military where they treated him a disease

He: He gets drunk after just a beer or two now because of his alcoholic hepatitis. The hepatitis means that his liver cells have become inflammed (injured). The unhealthy liver cells can no longer metabolize (break down) the alcohol he drinks. When his liver was healthier, the cells could metabolize the alcohol. If he continues to drink, he may well develop cirrhosis. Cirrhosis destroys liver cells and creates fibrous scar tissue. Since we need our liver to metabolize a lot more than just alcohol, it is essential to live. Please look up alanon in your yellow pages. If you suffer from alcoholic hepatitis and stop drinking will the liver ever fully recover back to normal from this? And if so how long?

Alcoholic hepatitis: The liver is a very hardy organ. Having alcoholic hepatitis means the alcohol was causing some damage to the liver cells. If you stop drinking alcohol this should recover fully. However repeated drinking over time can lead to more permanent damage to the liver resulting in cirrhosis. This damage is not reversible. It is difficult to determine the extent of damage with blood work for this. ...Read more

My mother was recently diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis. Doctors say her liver is completely damaged. What is her survival rate?

Depends!: The severity of the liver damage will be reflected to some extent in the levels of liver function blood tests.
